Mount Gay Rum Tour

Duration: Half Day

mount gay rum tour

The Caribbean is renowned for being the centre of world rum production, and nearly every major island group produces its own distinct style and flavour, using their own traditional production methods. Barbados tends to produce light, sweetish rums, made from the finest sugar canes which thrive in this region due to the warm, tropical climate. Whether you are a fan of rum or not, this fascinating tour will give you an insight into the culture, history and traditional production process of one of the world’s oldest and finest rums – Mount Gay.

The Mount Gay Rum tour will give you the chance to visit what is believed to be the oldest rum refinery in the world. Undoubtedly one of Barbados' most popular attractions, your journey begins in the Mount Gay Visitors Centre in Bridgetown, where you will receive a warm welcome and an introduction to the Barbados island culture. Barbados is renowned for its quality island rum, which is an integral part of its history.

Your friendly and professional tour guide will lead you around the factory, where you can learn the secrets behind the making of Mount Gay Rum and gain an intimate insight into its production processes, including refining, aging, blending and bottling, using time-honoured traditions. The actual distillery is in St. Lucy Parish to the north, but here you can see both the old and modern equipment used for making the rum, and the expertise behind the process.

Discover the heritage behind this distinguished golden spirit, which is more than 300 years old, dating back to as early as 1663. Steeped in rich Barbadian history, you will learn about one of the world's oldest brands of rum through age-old artifacts, black and white photos, film presentations and tasting.

At the end of the tour, you will be invited to indulge in some fun rum tasting at the Mount Gay Rum Bar, where you will receive tips on how to fully appreciate the superior quality of the different rums. Savour the rich, mellow aroma and the smooth taste of Mount Gay Rum, the result of having spent several years aging in oak casks. Don’t forget to grab a sample from the gift shop to take home – a holiday in Barbados wouldn’t be complete without it!
