Where you go on your honeymoon is so important, which is why it's helpful to see the range of options available.

My top honeymoon destinations for cultural couples

If you are looking for something a little bit different, and want to experience culture and history on your honeymoon, then don't worry, I've got it covered.

  1. Siem Reap, Cambodia

    Siem Reap, Cambodia

Cambodia is a culture addict's dream. Why? Because there's ancient ruins to uncover, a solemn reminder of a terrible history and plenty of chances to uncover local life. You can go and see the very famous temples of Angkor Wat, which is one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Ttake some time to explore Siem Reap

Once you are done with the temples, don't forget to take some time to explore Siem Reap which offers shopping, nightlife, food tours and a thriving cultural scene. Plus there's the shocking and eye-opening Killing Fields in Phnom Penh, which are well worth a visit, but aren't for the faint-hearted.

  2. Greek Islands, Greece

Lindos in Rhodes, Greek Islands, Greece

Not the most exotic honeymoon destination but the beautiful Greek islands have so much to offer culture vultures. Lose yourself in ancient ruins, walk up to the top of an acropolis for jaw-dropping views and uncover well-preserved cities and towns trapped in time. The town of Lindos in Rhodes is absolutely adorable and has its very own acropolis to admire.

  3. Istanbul, Turkey

    Istanbul, Turkey

Experience west meets east and old vs new in this enchanting city. Istanbul should certainly be on the top of your cultural to do list. For starters, there's nearly 70 museums, so if that's your thing, you could spend your entire honeymoon staring at artifacts and learning about the local culture. There's also an abundance of art galleries, the world's largest indoor market and plenty of unique shopping opportunities.

  4. Valletta, Malta

    Valletta, Malta

Malta is perfect for a honeymoon destination as it offers the best of both worlds. A dash of culture blended with a touch of luxury and a pretty coastline. Valletta is a city with a rich history that appears to be frozen in time, with it's old buildings and awe-inspiring architecture.

  5. Havana, Cuba

    Havana, Cuba

If you want to combine culture with a vibrant nightlife scene then Havana is the place for you. It's Cuba's capital city and is infused with Spanish culture and colonial architecture. There's lots to keep culture vultures occupied due to the abundance of sights.

    Morro Castle

Check out the history and architecture in Old Havana, visit Morro Castle and buildings such as El Capitolio, Castillo de la Real Fuerza and the Christ of Havana. Then after a long day of exploring you can sip on cocktails and maybe try a little salsa dancing.

  6. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

    Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Looking for a honeymoon destination with the wow factor? Rio is absolutely mesmerising. Get soaked at Iguazu Falls, barter at the street markets, have a go at some samba dancing and sample the endless selection of restaurant offering all sorts of international cuisines.

Learn the Afro-Brazilian martial art of capoeira

Fancy a challenge? Why not try and learn the Afro-Brazilian martial art of capoeira for a unique honeymoon activity. Sao Paolo is also worth a visit. It's possibly one of the most culturally diverse cities on the planet and it's got numerous modern art galleries if that's your thing.

  7. Sydney, Australia

    Sydney, Australia

If you are willing to travel further afield, well, practically to the other side of the world, then don't miss Sydney. This cosmopolitan city is a multicultural gem. The cultural scene here is unbelievable, with growing performing arts, literature music and pop culture scenes.

    Sydney Opera House

Plus there's the famous landmarks that you absolutely must see such as Sydney Opera House and the Museum of Contemporary Art. Sydney also hosts a plethora of events, so you might want to check the calendar to get the most out of your cultural trip.

  8. Halong Bay, Vietnam

    Halong Bay, Vietnam

Vietnam offers gorgeous white sandy beaches, the wetlands of the Mekong Delta and stunning scenery combined with a whole lotta history and culture. Delve into the fascinating history of the Vietnam war and see where the Vietnamese soldiers hid in a network of tunnels.

    Wetlands of the Mekong Delta

Make sure you also visit UNESCO World Heritage Site Halong Bay which has over 3,000 limestone islands jutting out of emerald waters. You can sunbathe on the decks and visit remote floating fishing villages in a traditional rowing boat, by day, and stargaze at night.

New title here as heading for conclusions

Hopefully a couple of those destinations might appeal to you and you might start to get an idea of where you want to go. Watch out for my next honeymoon article, which will cover uber romantic and relaxing destinations for those who just want an exotic honeymoon in paradise.
