Beauty of the Maldives
The beauty of the Maldives is of the simplest kind, there's no adornment needed to its striking natural landscapes and amazing raw splendour. Uninhabited islets, crystalline shallow waters, turquoise lagoons, untouched wilderness, verdant vegetation, teeming wildlife - a true spectacle for the senses in every way.
From spectacular trails to wonderful wildlife encounters, Maldives has everything nature lovers could desire. On land you can spot a wide variety of pelagic birds, from the seasonal frigatebirds to Eurasian migratory birds and a few that are endemic to the Indian sub-continent. Dwelling in the marshes you can also come across big birds such as the Grey Heron and the Moorhen.
On water there are many species to encounter (especially beneath the surface) but some of the ones you can greet without having to dive deep down include sting rays and manta rays as both species can often been found close to the shore, swimming in shallow waters.
Now, if there is one activity that this nation is famous for and that gives you the most rewarding experience you could have in this part of the world, that's definitely scuba diving.
Maldives' underwater world is like entering another dimension, a truly kaledoiscopic one for the senses and one that will leave you in true wide-eyed awe and wonderment. From gentle, elegant creatures like sea turtles to impressive giant ones like whale sharks.
Many different experiences
But there's more to Maldives than beachcombing and diving, there's plenty more in fact, and, if you make an effort to see more and do more, you'll be pleasantly rewarded.
From amazing submarine experiences (ideal of those not keen on donning scuba gear and diving down to the depths of the Indian Ocean), to exclusive dining experiences at the world's first underwater restaurant at the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, to big-game fishing, dolphin-watching and scenic seaplane flights. And for the eco-enthusiasts and nature lovers there's also the amazing experience of dining in a panoramic organic garden at the Gili Lankanfushi.
While most prefer to take their time in the Maldives as an opportunity to lay back, step down, and get back to basics by simply connecting with nature, there's plenty here to keep you busy, active and entertained should the thought of boredom ever enter your mind.
At the beach, you can engage in all manner of water sports from kayaking, snorkelling, kiteboarding and wakeboarding, to parasailing and surfing or windsurfing , you can do it all and more.
Revitalisation and reinvigoration
Another thing the Maldives is renowned for and is fabulously well-suited to is its magnificent spas. This is why some of the most amazing spas in the world are found here, located as part of private resorts that cover entire islands or atolls.
Just the environment and the setting in which to enjoy the most pampering spa treatments and massages is stunning in the Maldives. From scenic outdoor settings amidst lush tropical foliage, white sands and endless shades of blue stretching as far as the eye can see to exclusive underwater parlours, like the one found inside Huvafen Fushi, where you can see fish swimming past you as you enjoy a soothing treatment.
The Maldivian People
The kind and faithfully devoted Islamic people of the Maldives, are a small, very unified and kindred community.
The culture of the Maldives is humble, as this is such a small society but you can immerse in their traditions and way of life by going to a traditional fishing village and observe Maldivian men fishing in their traditional Dhoni boats, or watching as women work at their crafts.
The centre of urban life in Maldives is its capital city and island, Male, the centre of all modern life. This is where most of the population of the islands concentrate and as such this is where any actual urban way of life is found.
It is quite striking to see from an aerial point of view how the island is in fact saturated by tall modern buildings and developments, at first glance you wouldn't even think it's such a secluded and romantic location as the Maldives is famous for being. Yet, don't let this view fool you, striking secluded beaches that go on for miles and miles can still be found in Male, along with high-end luxury resorts.
