St Lucia tops global honeymoon destinations, again

St Lucia has topped the list of the world’s best honeymoon destinations, and not for the first time. In fact, far from it. The accolade was awarded at the 2018 World Travel Awards, held in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon in December. The Caribbean island, long considered one of the most romantic on the planet, won out against strong competition, with Cartagena in Columbia, Jamaica, Maui, Hawaii, Mauritius, Miami Beach, Maldives and Paris also making the shortlist.

St Lucia tops global honeymoon destinations, again

While this is the first time St Lucia has triumphed this decade, it has now been top of the class in this category a staggering ten times. No other destination has won the prestigious title as many times, making a convincing argument that the island— famous for its stunning beaches and the twin Piton mountains— really is the finest place to relish post-nuptial with the love of your life. Only Mauritius comes close to matching the record, winning the trophy four times.

Saint Lucia Chief Executive Officer Tiffany Howard, said:

“This award places St. Lucia in a class of its own in terms of honeymoons and romance."

"Being named one of the most beautiful destinations in the world is a huge honour, but surpassing them all is an even more rewarding achievement.”

A large billboard declaring the victory was erected outside Hewanorra International Airport to commemorate the occasion on 2nd December, featuring both news of the victory and some choice destinations on the island that may appeal to amorous couples. The news comes after St Lucia was awarded the title of the Caribbean’s best honeymoon destination on 23rd September. That victory allowed it to then compete for the world title.

The World Travel Awards are the most sought after in the global travel industry, and were first established back in 1993— making St Lucia’s victory all the more special given 2018 marks the ceremony’s 25th anniversary. Nicholas John, Chairman of the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority, collected the award on behalf of the destination at the event.

Two weeks after the awards, St Lucia was nominated in no less than four categories at the 26th annual World Travel Awards within the Caribbean region. These include Caribbean’s Leading Cruise Destination, Caribbean’s Leading Destination, Caribbean’s Leading Honeymoon Destination, and Caribbean’s Leading Luxury Island Destination 2019. Voting in each category of the forthcoming regional competition opened on December 11 and closed on January 10. The winners will attend the World Travel Awards Caribbean & North American Gala Ceremony on January 28 at Sandals Montego Bay, Jamaica, which directly precedes the 37th Caribbean Travel Marketplace.
