Dominican Republic named Best Golf Destination for Latin America and the Caribbean

The Dominican Republic has been named the Best Golf Destination in Latin America and the Caribbean at the World Golf Awards 2019 hosted by the International Association of Tour Operators of Golf (IAGTO). This is the fourth time the Caribbean country has been recognised for its golf offering, which includes 26 world-class and award-winning golf courses across the country, many situated by the sea.

The awards were announced at the International Golf Travel Market (IGTM), held this year in the Slovenian city of Ljubljana. The popular Caribbean holiday destination was picked as the regional winner by members of the World Golf Tourism Organization of IAGTO, which includes professionals from the tourism and golf travel industry – senior executives, travel buyers, tour operators, agents and media professionals.

Consumers were also invited to vote online through the World Golf Awards website, a subsidiary of the World Travel Awards, which serve to celebrate and reward excellence in golf tourism, world-class golf and golf destinations. The suffrage was carried out through a simple majority system to guarantee impartiality and independence.

The Dominican Republic was also chosen as the main destination for travel in this market segment in 2009, 2013 and 2016.

The Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Tourism’s marketing consultant, Magaly Toribio, said the country has worked hard to establish the Dominican Republic as a main golf destination. She commented:

“We are proud that our hard work and impressive infrastructure are recognized by IAGTO as the Best Golf Destination in Latin America and the Caribbean in 2019.”

Toribio said golf is an integral part of tourism in the Dominican Republic, and they are satisfied that the country’s golf offering continues to be recognized in international markets.

The Ministry of Tourism’s director of e-marketing, Evelyn Paiewonsky, accepted the award on behalf of tourism minister Francisco Javier Garcia, thanking IAGTO for the honour. She noted that the country has developed an excellent tourism infrastructure and golfing facilities that include courses with 86 holes overlooking the sea and 39 by the ocean.

In all, she said the country has 26 challenging and impressive golf courses, which have helped the Dominican Republic to remain the golf capital of the Caribbean
