Barbados is great for family travel

Mhairri Woodall, a writer for the Calgary Herald, recently travelled to Barbados on a family vacation. The writer chose Barbados for its sandy beaches and crystal blue water, and picked the Sea Breeze Beach House—a boutique all-inclusive on the southern part of the island—for a perfect holiday. Woodall found that the resort’s protected location made it ideal for beginning body surfing and swimming. The resort features two pristine beaches, three pools, multiple rum bars, a kids club and two-bedroom family suites.

Boatyard Beach, in Carlisle Bay, is a great place for water play. Woodall’s daughter enjoyed the huge ocean trampolines and zooming down the extreme waterslide. Admission also includes a snorkel trip to see the island’s shipwrecks and sea turtles. The tour takes about 45 minutes, and free WiFi is available.

Cool Runnings catamaran cruise surpassed all expectations. They booked the half-day lunch snorkel tour, which includes round trip transfers from the hotel to the dock in Bridgetown. Since snorkelling takes place in the same location as the Boatyard Beach trip, the family spent most of their time dancing on-board with the captain and crew.

The most popular off-the-water attraction in Barbados is Harrison’s Cave in St. Thomas parish. Here, visitors can venture underground to witness the natural phenomenon. During the hour-long guided tour, guests can explore the active stream cave and learn about its history and geology. Throughout the tunnel network, we discovered breathtaking waterfalls, emerald pools and visually stunning caverns encrusted with countless stalactite and stalagmite formations.

Guests can also tour the 350-year old Jacobean-style plantation house at St. Nicholas Abbey for a unique history lesson and speciality rum tasting. The sprawling property covers 400 acres encompassing sugar cane fields, towering mahogany groves and verdant tropical ravines. With its beautiful gardens, abbey cats and chatty cockatoos, children will love it.

As if all of this weren’t enough to make Barbados a dream destination, the island has delicious culinary offerings.
