The Surprising Impact of Luxury Travel
The world-famous Hilton hotels are nearing their 100-year milestone. With this, new research by Stanford Business professor and best-selling author Chip Heath uncovers “The Hilton Effect” – defining the impact and influence of the hotel company around the world.
The Hilton is a recognizable brand name the world over. But what impact does the world’s first global hotel company have on individual countries?
In Asia Pacific, the Hilton is currently one of the fastest-growing global hospitality companies. Stanford Business professor and best-selling author Chip Heath presents a comprehensive overview of the ongoing influence of the Hilton chain around the world, in his book “The Hilton Effect”.
According to a report from Hospitality Net, the book closely examines the company and its founding by Conrad Hilton, who dreamed of creating more than simply a comfortable place to sleep. Instead, he hoped to create an experience. Through extensive research and in-depth interviews, Heath focused on three main pillars that he defines as The Hilton Effect: Guests, Team Members, and Communities/Economies.
The Hilton Effect on Guests
According to Heath, the vision of the Hilton chain was to create easy travel and to help guests broaden their experiences via modern business travel, concierge services for female travellers, and air conditioned rooms.
In Asia Pacific, Heath claims that Hilton's hotels have helped put numerous new destinations on the map, such as Maldives Rangali Island, which introduced the first underwater restaurant, Ithaa, which had the first villas on stilts, and now, the first underwater residence The Muraka.
The Hilton Effect on Team Members
Heath claims that the Hilton chain has had a major impact on millions of employees worldwide, which the company refers to as Team Members in order to foster a sense of belonging and entrepreneurial spirit.
In Asia Pacific, there are currently 50,000 people working in Hilton's hotels and corporate offices. The Hilton Company was named Asia's best multinational workplace by Great Place to Work this year, and it continues to expand while inspiring multiple generations of hospitality talent with the Hilton Vocational Training Center in Naypyitaw. The ground-breaking program was established in partnership with Myanmar's Ministry of Hotels and Tourism in order to offer valuable job skills and language training in Myanmar.
The Hilton Effect on Communities and Economies
With such a huge impact on local communities, it’s no surprise that the Hilton chain has become inextricably linked with the history, economies and infrastructure of communities all over the world.
Across Asia Pacific, the Hilton brand has organized numerous initiatives to engage the larger community, hoping to make a positive difference in people's lives beyond the hotels.
In India, Hilton works with non-profit organization Sundara to promote good hygiene practices throughout poorer communities in Mumbai via their recycling partnership. In doing so, this initiative helps to decrease the number of children and families suffering from hygiene issues such as gastrointestinal problems and skin problems.
Since 2011, the impact has been enormous in this area, as more than 1,800 Hilton hotels have been involved in soap and amenity recycling in their efforts to have a positive effect on local communities.
