Veranda Tamarin becomes Mauritius’ newest boutique surf resort

Veranda Resorts in Mauritius has announced the opening of Veranda Tamarin in December 2018, following an extensive six-month renovation to revamp the Hotel Tamarin, adding 50 more rooms, and transforming it into a surf and watersports hub worthy of its location beside the legendary left-hand reef break of Tamarin Bay.

Situated on the west coast of the Indian Ocean island, Tamarin Bay was made famous in the 1970s following the streaming of cult surfing documentary, The Forgotten Island of Santosha, enticing experienced and beginner surfers from across the globe to try out world-class surfing spots, the Dal, to the south of the bay, and the Black Stone to the north.

The resort's location will lend itself to a plethora of watersport and beachside activities for guests, from taking to a board with the local surfing school, to dolphin spotting, kitesurfing, boat and catamaran excursions, PADI scuba diving experiences and more.

As well as adding new rooms, the hotel’s existing rooms have been completely refurbished. In total, the resort will have 116 rooms accommodating 2-3 people with views facing out towards the gardens, mountains, swimming pool and Tamarin Bay. All rooms at the resort will include a furnished terrace, air conditioning, wi-fi, satellite television, a minibar and tea and coffee station, and guests will be provided with a beach kit that includes a beach basket, cooler, mat and beach towel.

According to Veranda Resorts, the concept behind the new design is to reflect the authenticity of the destination, and the community spirit of the Tamarin Bay village. The resort will feature community spaces where guests can integrate with locals and learn the art of Mauritian living. Complete with modern interiors, the resort will offer a fresh and contemporary retreat ideal for guests seeking a culturally immersive holiday.

Two swimming pools, a surf shop, an aquagym and a fitness centre will be among the resort’s amenities, which will also include the new Seven Colours spa offering holistic treatments, beauty therapies and activities such as yoga, alongside a sauna and relaxation area.

The boutique hotel’s dining options will include Mauritian fare at its main restaurant, Ye! Man, while pool bar and restaurant Tribu will offer self-service drinks during the day, and an à la carte menu in the evening. The Crazy Fish Bar will aim to bring Tamarin Bay’s beach culture to the resort, with lighter dishes offered in the day, and tapas plates and live jazz in the evening. Another bar, View, will serve up sundowner cocktails, fresh Mauritian juices and rums, overlooking the bay. The handy Kas Dal kiosk will also serve street food bites and provide picnic packs for those heading out on a day trip.

Unusual aspects of the new resort include the Boma, a place for sharing around the fire that will host an outdoor cinema once a week, a help-yourself bar, the Table des Mascareignes where guests can sample delicacies from across the region, and a laundry area that doubles as a place to read, play board games, and listen to music on a vintage jukebox, all to foster a sense of community.

A popular tropical beach destination with many natural attractions, Mauritius is celebrating 50 years of independence this year, during which time its tourism industry has gone from strength to strength. Island highlights close to the resort include Les Salines of Tamarin salt pans, the Casela Nature and Leisure Park, the Chamarel coloured earth site and UNESCO-listed Le Morne
