AMResorts expands Responsible Travel program with plastic straw ban

Luxury hotel company AMResorts has announced it is completely eliminating the use of plastic straws across its 55 resorts in Central America and the Caribbean.

Guests at the company’s resorts, which include brands Zoetry Wellness and Secrets Resorts and Spas, will be given biodegradable or reusable straws instead.

The new initiative is the latest addition to AMResorts’ Responsible Travel initiative that includes efforts to improve the sustainability and environmental credentials of each hotel. Effective immediately, staff at all AMResorts’ properties are no longer serving drinks with straws.

Given AMResorts’ large footprint in popular beach destinations in Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America, eliminating straws will have some impact in reducing the plastic burden on the local natural environment and is another step forward in the company’s wildlife conservation and environmental sustainability initiatives.

AMResorts’ Director of Sales and Marketing in the UK, Agnes Czekanska, said:

“AMResorts welcomes thousands of guests annually and knows the power a seemingly simple act can have on protecting the oceans and beaches our resorts call home. Our priority is to provide guests with an unmatched resort experience while maintaining eco-friendly practices in the process.”

Since launching in 2001, responsible travel has been a cornerstone in AMResorts’ standard operating procedures and resort programs. The efforts take on many forms across all resorts to leave a positive mark on each destination, from actively supporting wildlife conservation programs to developing initiatives to benefit local communities.

The majority of the hotels in AMResorts Collection are Rainforest Alliance Certified, and several are part of Amigos de Sian Ka’an, an organization dedicated to the sustainability and conservation of the local communities in the Sian Ka’an biosphere throughout Quintana Roo in Mexico.

Based in Philadelphia, AMResorts runs six luxury all-inclusive brands offering signature packages such as Endless Privileges®, Unlimited-Luxury® and Unlimited Fun® programs. Located throughout Mexico, Jamaica, Curacao, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, and Panama, the fast-growing company has 55 hotels in its collection.

Its six brands include boutique Zoëtry Wellness & Spa Resorts, adults-only Secrets Resorts & Spas, lively Breathless Resorts & Spas, family-friendly Dreams Resorts & Spas, vibrant Now Resorts & Spas and fun-focused Sunscape Resorts & Spas.
