The luxurious resort complex Andaz Mayakoba, has revealed that it will be joining with global efforts to reduce plastic with the introduction of new biodegradable avocado seed straws. The resort will replace all single-use plastic straws with the new sustainable straws.

Located in the Riviera Maya in Mexico, the hotel and residential complex is stepping up its sustainable and eco-friendly practices. The huge resort is surrounded by lush, diverse natural landscapes which are home to thousands of species of fauna, flora and wildlife species.

The idea of using these straws are the brainchild of Mexican medical student, Scott Munguía, who founded the company BioFase. Munguía studied Chemical Engineering at Mexico City’s Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education, where he specialised in bioplastic technology. He researched sustainable materials which could replace plastic for the production of straws, and in 2011, he discovered a way produce a biopolymer from avocado seed.

The BioFase company focuses on developing sustainable products from natural resources, using a patented technology. The company produces resins, biodegradable cutlery, and specialised products. The new avocado seed straws will take between 90 and 240 days to degrade, compared to plastic straws which can take up to 400 years to degrade.

“Andaz Mayakoba has a great commitment to the preservation and improvement of ecosystems worldwide. As an ecological destination, we have established an alliance with BioFase to take care of the environment and preserve nature. Andaz Mayakoba is home to a wide diversity of flora and fauna, which makes it a unique destination to visit.”

Said a statement from the resort complex. The eco-friendly Andaz Mayakoba Resort complex is set upon 593 acres of land which is made up of turquoise lagoons, mangrove forests, sand dunes, cenotes, canals, and pristine white sand beaches. Guests are transported to the resort’s crystal-clear turquoise lagoons and the mile-long unspoiled beach on boats via canals that have been built exclusively for the Mayakoba Resort.

Ath these complex holidaymakers can choose to stay at three onsite upscale Cancun hotels - Banyan Tree, Fairmont and Rosewood – where they can relax in a luxurious environment surrounded by magnificent natural and tranquil landscapes. As well as providing a tropical oasis for travellers, the luxury resort focuses on conservation, and the 148 acres of mangrove forests that fringe the coastline provide refuge for nesting birds as well as vital shelter for fish and turtles.
