Dominican Republic recording Caribbean's strongest growth in hotel construction

The Dominican Republic is experiencing significant growth in the development and construction of hotels. The nation currently has 4,447 hotel rooms under construction, which represents 6.3 of its entire hotel room supply.

The Dominican Republic has the largest hotel construction pipeline in the Caribbean, and is a strong Caribbean hub for hotel investment. Cuba currently has 2,240 hotel rooms under construction, and has 556 rooms in Puerto Rico. Across the Caribbean-Mexico region, more than 23,860 rooms are in development.

The Dominican Republic is a leading tourist destination in the Caribbean, and hotspot for families, couples and adventure lovers. The nation recorded a 7.7 per cent increase in visitor in the first four months of 2018, and last year, it received a record-breaking 6.18 million visitors, which was a 3.9 per cent increase compared to 2016.

The country’s newest cruise port, Amber Cove, is also seeing significant growth this year. According to figures released by the Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Tourism, the port welcomed 64,415 passengers in July, compared to 35,320 in July 2017. The port is located in Puerto Plata and opened in 2015, and receives an average of 15,000 weekly visitors.

The Dominican Republic occupies two thirds of the island of "Hispaniola" in the Caribbean, and it is home to tropical landscapes and a sunny, warm climate. The country’s main tourist destinations include Puerto Plata, Romana, Santo Domingo, Boca Chica, Samana, Santiago and Punta Cana.

The family-friendly Punta Cana region sits on the eastern edge of the island, and is home to powder-soft white sand, palm-lined beaches and turquoise water and lagoons. The area is bursting with a range of luxury and affordable hotels and resorts that cater for adults and families.

The capital, Santo Domingo, is a historic city divided by the Ozama River, and home to beautiful Victorian buildings and architecture. The city has a collection of fascinating historic monuments and attractions, including Columbus's Lighthouse, and the well-preserved 15th and 16th century architecture, such as Iglesia Regina Angelorum and the "Convento de los Dominicos".

Puerto Plata is located on the north coast, and is famous for its pristine sweeping beaches. The town’s historic 16th-century Fortaleza San Felipe is a main attraction, and holidaymakers can play golf, go shopping in local markets, visit museums and monuments, and enjoy water sports including sailing, fishing, kayaking and scuba diving.
