Tourism in Jordan grows with reports of unprecedented figures

Jordan's tourism industry closed the first half of the year with very positive figures as the country's Tourism Ministry declared the increase in visitors and tourism revenue "unprecedented". The boom in tourist visits during the first six months of 2018 is partly credited to new incentives put in place by Jordan's tourism authorities with the organisation of new events like the Jordan Festival as well as other factors like the recent visit of HRH Prince William.

Tourism in Jordan grows with reports of unprecedented figures

Jordan has experienced incredible growth as a destination over the past six months according to recent official reports from the country’s Ministry of Tourism.

Authorities revealed that the history-rich Middle Eastern nation with a wealth of amazing ancient man-made and natural attractions has achieved unprecedented tourism figures in the first half of 2018.

The great news was welcomed as Issa Gammoh, Secretary General at the Tourism Ministry announced that it was not just tourism numbers that had increased but also tourism revenue:

“Tourism revenues and number of tourist groups increased by 27.2 per cent and 25 per cent respectively.”

Gammoh added that he attributed this boom in tourism figures to several factors, but mainly the different activities organised by the government in order to attract more travellers.

One such activity is the currently ongoing Jordan Festival which started in the first week of August and was created in collaboration with the nation’s private sector. So far, the festival has featured a great line-up of performers, including internationally-famous invited guests like Tom Jones and Tom Odell, both of whom gave live concerts in Amman.

After its ongoing success, there are plans for the Jordan Festival to be celebrated every year, with future editions taking place in areas beyond Amman Citadel and concerts planned in other theatres of the capital.

The executive director of the Friends of Jordan Festival (FJF), Souha Bawab added that the main goal behind the creation of such festivities was to support and promote cultural and family tourism in Jordan while increasing visibility of the country’s unique attraction. Bawab explained:

“We also want to put Jordan in the international map as a hospitable place and a country that is abundant with historical venues.”

The recent visit of Prince William last June during an official royal tour has also helped put Jordan firmly put on the map for visitors. The much-publicised visit saw the Duke of Cambridge tour the ancient city of Jerash with its magnificent first-century Roman ruins, where he was reminded of the fact that his now wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, lived there as a child with her family. In fact, he stood right on the very stop where she had once been photographed next to her father Michael Middleton and younger sister, Pippa Middleton.

On another note, Gammoh also revealed that Jordan has experienced a surge in visitors from emerging markets like the Gulf states, Southeast Asia, Europe, Canada and the U.S.
