InterContinental Colombo to open in Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankan capital of Colombo will soon have a new luxury property, the InterContinental Colombo. Scheduled to open in 2019, the new property will be centrally located on Colombo's Galle Road and is expected to be the tallest hotel tower in the city.

InterContinental Colombo to open in Sri Lanka

Expected to open in 2019, InterContinental Colombo will feature 307 rooms including 47 suites. The iconic property will be spread across 480,000 square feet and the luxury hotel is expected to be the tallest hotel tower, comprising 42 floors, in Colombo 3, which is an important and established commercial area of the city.

The new property from InterContinental will be located centrally along Galle Road, one of the arterial roads of Colombo, making it easily accessible for guests. Situated in close proximity to international and domestic airports and 3 km from the city centre, the hotel will cater to the growing demand for business and leisure accommodation in the city.

The upcoming InterContinental Colombo will include impressive meeting and banqueting facilities spread over 12,000 square feet, with the largest room having a capacity to accommodate 400 guests and a modern business centre to cater to the growing number of business travellers visiting the city.

The property will also feature a gymnasium, an outdoor pool, and a spa for guests to relax and rejuvenate. All rooms and suites will be equipped with top-class modern amenities to ensure guests’ comfort, and most rooms will have uninterrupted, majestic views of the Indian Ocean. Additionally, guests will have plenty of choices when it comes to dining options, including an all-day dining restaurant and three speciality restaurants offering unique culinary experiences.

Known in the 1800s as “the garden city of the East,” the Sri Lankan capital has experienced an upsurge in tourism in recent years. For much of the twentieth century, Colombo was seen simply as the place you flew into before reaching Sri Lanka’s famed beaches, but the city has been revitalized in recent years and Galle Road, once simply the site of epic traffic jams, has numerous new hotels, shops, and restaurants.

InterContinental is the world’s first international luxury hotel brand and has led the travel industry for more than 70 years. The brand traces its history back to 1946, when Pan American World Airways began an international hotel brand, InterContinental Hotels.
