Tourism numbers in Jamaica are booming, according to the latest figures released by the Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett. The Caribbean country recorded a significant rise in tourist arrivals in the first quarter of 2018.

Between January and March 2018, Jamaica received 1.3 million visitors from all over the world, including stayover tourists and cruise passengers. This was a 6.6 per cent increase compared to the same period in the previous year, with 80,000 more visitors recorded this year.

The numbers indicate the continued success of the country’s record-breaking numbers last year. In 2017, the island nation welcomed 4.3 million international visitors, and foreign exchange earnings of approximately US$3 billion.

In the first week of April this year, Jamaica received a 14.1 per cent increase in stopover visitors, compared to the same month in 2017. According to Minister Bartlett, many of the 51,384 visitors were at the beginning of the month who visited the island for the carnival celebrations..

Mr Bartlett said the increase in visitors has largely been down to the Airbnb concept on the island that provides accommodation for all budgets and tastes. There were 55,000 tourists who stayed in Airbnb accommodation in Jamaica in 2017, which paid nearly $1 billion paid to local hosts.

Mr Bartlett, commented:

“It is providing real economic benefits to regular people and we can see the sharing economy in action. Airbnb is offering an ideal opportunity to spread benefits from the sector beyond traditional resort areas and into local communities.”

Jamaica is one of the Caribbean’s most popular tourist destinations. Blessed with palm-fringed white sand beaches, turquoise sea, and majestic mountains, the island is a tropical paradise for couples, families, solo travellers and groups.

Holidaymakers can head to the country’s natural wonders such as the Blue Mountains, Negril’s famous Seven Mile Beach, and Dunn’s River Falls. There are numerous golf courses, beaches, rainforests, national parks and walking trails to enjoy. Popular tourists attractions include the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston, Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park, Dolphin Cove, Green Grotto Caves, the famous James Bond Beach, the Enchanted Gardens, Rose Hall, Kool Runnings Water Park and Shaw Park Botanical Gardens.
