Resort 12, a luxury LGBT-only rehab resort opens in Chiang Mai

A luxury rehab resort aimed at helping Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people to overcome addiction and trauma issues has opened in the northern Thai town of Chiang Mai. Resort 12, which is the first rehabilitation centre of its kind outside the USA, has already been endorsed by stars including Elton John and Boy George.

Resort 12 is modelled on a deluxe wellness resort and includes landscaped grounds, an infinity pool and 20 stylish en suite guest rooms. It offers bespoke treatment and one, two or three-month recovery programmes to LGBT people with a range of addiction and mental health issues including gambling, drug and alcohol abuse, sex addiction and depression.

The new resort is run exclusively by LGBT staff with experience of treating addiction and trauma. According to its website:

“Treatment of LGBTQ people for addiction and trauma is much more successful when it addresses the specific challenges faced by members of this community, in an environment exclusively dedicated to their needs.”

As well as an open-sided terrace restaurant serving healthy fusion cuisine, the resort’s exclusive facilities include smart treatment rooms, an inviting yoga and meditation studio, and a massage space. Concierge services include everything from daily laundry and personal shopping to arranging salon treatments.

Guests also have access to The Cabin’s large, fully equipped mountain-view gym, 20-metre-long lap pool, spin studio and a court for five-a-side football and basketball. A team of fitness trainers help clients improve their physical wellbeing with bespoke exercise plans that can include weight training, martial arts, self-defence and triathlon training.

Endorsing the resort, Elton John and his partner David Furnish said:

“Both Elton and I applaud the launch of this vital addiction treatment centre. Resort 12 will be the first LGBTQ-dedicated, destination rehab facility outside of America. We need more places like this to help address the specific needs of LGBTQ addicts globally.”

Global pop star Boy George added:

“Everything good in my life right now is because I am sober. When I was first in recovery, awareness around LGBTQ addiction and trauma was limited. That’s changed. And that’s why an LGBTQ treatment centre like Resort 12 is so important.”
