Antigua 360 Round the Island Race planned for February

This year's Antigua 360 is planned for February 16. The event is the third of its kind and is a precursor to the RORC Caribbean 600 offshore classic. The Antigua 360 was conceived by Stan Pearson and fellow sailors and in the years since the inaugural event, it has become one of the premier sailing events in the Caribbean.

Antigua 360 Round the Island Race planned for February

The third edition of the Antigua 360 Race will take place on Friday, February 16, 2018, providing a 52-mile anti-clockwise circumnavigation of Antigua. Organized by the Antigua Superyacht Challenge committee, the race is followed 3 days later by the RORC Caribbean 600 offshore classic which is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2018.

This year’s race features a new element: the race is open to all boats whether racing in the RORC Caribbean 600 or those who just want to take a crack at the record. Many of those who are racing the ‘600 are usually out training on the Friday before the offshore race, so the Antigua 360 adds a slightly competitive edge to that training, according to Stan Pearson, who conceived the Antigua 360 and is a co-founder of the RORC Caribbean 600. Pearson added that:

“The race around Antigua offers many of the conditions and wind angles seen on the ‘600—and some of the legs are even actually part of it such as the start and the finish.”

The Prize Giving will be held as soon as possible after the race, at the Admiral’s Inn Nelson Dockyard. Line Honours for both the Monohull and Multihull Classes will be awarded with a barrel of rum, with an additional barrel for a race record. The overall winner of the race, for yachts racing under IRC, will also receive a barrel.

The inaugural Antigua 360 took place on February 19, 2016. In that first race, the RP90, La Bete, set a monohull race record of 5 Hours 00 Minutes 26 Seconds for the 52-mile course. The race was the brainchild of Stan Pearson and a group of enthusiastic fellow sailors with the intention that it would be a true and meaningful practise day before the main RORC event. In the years since the inaugural race, the Antigua 360 has grown in popularity and will continue to be a must-do event for all future participants of the classic 600 mile offshore.

According to its founders, the great thing about the Antigua 360 is that it provides the exact conditions teams will have to address when sailing in the 600 mile race.
