Wild Coasted Tented Lodge to open in Sri Lanka in November

The Fernando family is famous in Sri Lanka for being the founders of Dilmah Tea and the Resplendent Ceylon collection of hotels, and they are about to launch their latest hotel in the country. The Wild Coast Tented Lodge will open to guests this November, providing a luxury eco retreat for nature and wildlife enthusiasts.

Located on a white sandy beach on the outskirts of the Yala National Park in south-eastern Sri Lanka, the new Wild Coast Tented Lodge will have 28 tented suites with high vaulted ceilings. The design of the lodge has been inspired by its natural surroundings, and 16 of the suites cluster around a watering hole that is frequented by a variety of animals and birds.

The luxury suites boast four-poster beds, handmade copper bathtubs, and four beach-facing suites will have private plunge pools. There will also be eight cocoon suites with adjoining “urchins” – small cocoons - with twin beds for children and teenagers. Each suite has in-room amenities including running hot and cold water, air conditioning, wireless internet, minibars, and Sonos streaming audio.

The lodge is fringed by a beautiful beach with huge rocks and boulders and the lapping waves of the Indian Ocean. The facilities and accommodation are set against the lush tropical jungle of the Yala National Park, which is famous for its leopard inhabitants.

During their stay, guests can dine at the chic Bamboo Dining Pavilion, or enjoy cocktails under the stars in the natural beach garden. The Sanctuary Spa at Wild Coast Tented Lodge is the perfect place to unwind in a tranquil natural setting, and enjoy some pampering with a treatment that features native Ceylon Tea and Ceylon Cinnamon ingredients. There is also a library which doubles up as an education centre, where guests can learn about the parks wildlife.

Built with the protection of its natural surroundings at the forefront, the lodge boasts a series of eco-friendly, green and sustainable initiatives. The buildings have been constructed using bamboo; a solar plant will meet 40 per cent of the lodge’s energy needs; grey water will be recycled from guest rooms and public areas to use on the landscapes; organic waste will be composted on site; and there will be a conservation station that will monitor and protect vulnerable wildlife within the area, such as the Sri Lankan leopard.

During their stay, holidaymakers can attend a series of lectures and workshops, which will focus on wild elephant behaviour, bird watching and nature walks. There will also be safaris into the Yala National Park, and excursions to the local ancient Buddhist sites.
