Etihad Airways encourages transit travellers to stay in Abu Dhabi with launch of 48 Hour Challenge

Etihad Airways has launched a new campaign to encourage transit travellers to spend more time in Abu Dhabi. The ‘48 Hour Challenge’ is aimed at travellers visiting the emirate for a stopover between destinations and UAE residents planning short break “staycations”. The airline launched the promotion with a video of Ricky Wilson, the frontman of the rock band Kaiser Chiefs, who recently spend 48 hours in Abu Dhabi.

Etihad Airways has revealed details of its newest campaign that is challenging travellers to enjoy a range of activities in two days in Abu Dhabi. The "48 Hour Challenge" is part of a wider stopover campaign that will encourage travellers in transit to stay in the emirate for longer, as well as promote the destination as a “staycation” choice for UAE residents.

The campaign was launched by the frontman of the rock band Kaiser Chiefs, Ricky Wilson, who filmed his recent 48 hours in Abu Dhabi. The singer’s video showed him taking part in fun activities such as sandboarding, dune buggy rides, camel riding, roller coaster rides, racing cars, and belly dancing.

Ricky, explained:

“For me a stopover meant sitting in the airport, or visiting duty free, but this is not what a stopover should be.”

 “It should be flying falcons across the desert, kayaking, visiting water parks…imbibing the culture of the place. Abu Dhabi has taught me that stopovers can be as relaxing as they are exhilarating. There is something incredibly refreshing about pushing yourself, getting out of your comfort zone and fully immersing yourself in a new city.”

Etihad Airways has launched a competition to promote the stopover promotion. There will be 500 prizes to members of the public who take up the 48 Hour Challenge by the end of 2017 and post their photos on Instagram.

The campaign also has a variety of participating companies who are offering deals on activities, attractions and hotels. These include the Manarat Al Saadiyat, the soon-to-open Louvre Museum, the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and its Yas Marina Circuit, Yas Waterworld and Ferrari World, golf courses, desert safari tours, as well as restaurants and shops.
