Beautiful Bahia de las Aguilas could be next tourism hub in Dominican Republic

A brand new tourism hub is planned for the Dominican Republic which is set to rival the country’s popular Punta Cana and Puerto Plata destinations. Bahia de las Aguilas (Bay of the Eagles) on the southwester coast of the Caribbean nation boasts a pristine eight-kilometre-long beach, and has been put on the radar of a number of hospitality companies.

Beautiful Bahia de las Aguilas could be next tourism hub in Dominican Republic

Punta Cana, Puerto Plata and La Romana look set to be up against some stiff competition in the tourism market in the Dominican Republic, after the country’s president announced that a new tourism hub is in the making.

Bahia de las Aguilas on the southwestern coast of the country could be the next hotspot for holidaymakers, after it was revealed that the Dominican Republic President Danilo Medina is planning to take a group of hospitality executives to visit the region this month.

According to Jose Ramon Peralta, the Dominican Republic’s Administrative Minister of the Presidency, representatives from major global hotel chains would meet with Medina to discuss the future of the region and the possibility of the construction of more than 15,000 new hotel rooms.

As well as a range of new hotels and resorts, the region could also see the construction of a new airport and port areas. At present, Bahia de las Aguilas ( bay of the Eagles) is home to one of the Caribbean’s most picturesque isolated beaches; an eight-kilometre uninterrupted white sandy stretch that sits between craggy cliffs and the tranquil lapping waves of the turquoise sea that are home to Caribbean lobsters and starfish and provide perfect conditions for snorkelling.

The bay is part of the UNESCO-listed Jaragua National Park and can only be accessed via a boat ride or a 20-minute journey through the national park. The nearest town to Bahia de las Aguilas is Perdenales which has a few basic hotels and restaurants.

The Dominican Republic is one of the leading tourist destinations in the Caribbean, and it draws millions of travellers of all ages every year. The country’s main tourism hubs are Punta Cana on the east coast which boasts the family-friendly resorts and the award-winning Bavaro Beach; La Romana which is the gateway to the idyllic islands of Saona and Catalina; Santo Domingo, the capital city which is home to 15th and 16th-century architecture in the Colonial Zone and Columbus's Lighthouse; and Puerto Plata where tourists can relax on unspoilt beaches or hike through lush jungles.

The tropical nation features a wide range of breath-taking natural landscapes, from cascading waterfalls to verdant jungles that are thriving with diverse wildlife. Holidaymakers can enjoy fun activities such as horse riding, hiking, mountain biking, whale watching, snorkelling, scuba diving, kayaking and sailing.
