Abu Dhabi to build first SeaWorld attraction outside of United States

A brand new SeaWorld theme park is in the pipeline in Abu Dhabi, according to government officials. The marine themed park will be located on Yas Island and is set to open in 2022.

It will be the first marine attraction in the United Arab Emirates that will focus on conservation, marine research, rescue and rehabilitation. Its aim is to engage, educate and inspire, and will provide a cutting-edge hub for local and global researchers, scientists and marine conservationists.

The centre will also be the first new SeaWorld that will not feature Orca whales, but it will have up-close animal encounters, huge attractions and a huge aquarium full of diverse marine creatures. Using 3D mapping and virtual-reality technologies, visitors can enjoy virtual scientific expeditions or deep-sea diving experiences. The addition of SeaWorld will add to Miral’s Yas Island four themed parks, which include Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, Yas Waterworld, and the Warner Bros theme park that will open in 2018.

Mohamed Al Zaabi, the Chief Executive of Miral, stated:

"There is no international standard of rehabilitation for wildlife in the UAE, and that is what SeaWorld is bringing to the game,"

and added:

"We are in the very early stages, but we are opening the window to an international company with more than 1,500 experts who have rescued about 28,000 animals over 30 years."

The marine park will educate visitors about the care of animals local to the region such as the dugong. The United Arab Emirates has the second largest population of the creatures that are endangered and related to the manatee.

Full details about the new SeaWorld have not yet been released, and it is currently in the early phases of design and planning. The centre will be built and operated by Miral, and Sea¬World will license its brand and offer expertise in animal care and protection.

Yas Island is an entertainment destination, located 30 minutes from mainland Abu Dhabi. The manmade island is home to the Yas Marina Circuit; the five-star Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi, which straddles the racing track; Ferrari World Abu Dhabi; Yas Marina; Yas Waterworld with 43 rides, slides and water attractions; the award-winning Yas Links Abu Dhabi golf course; and the Yas Mall with hundreds of international brands, restaurants and entertainment centres.
