Despite its turbulent beginning, the Baha Mar resort in the Bahamas is due to open in April, 2017. According to the island nation’s Prime Minister, Perry Christie, the $3.5 billion resort will launch its first phase with the partial opening of a casino hotel that will be operated by Hyatt Hotels, and will have 1,800 guest rooms and suites. The rest of the development will be opened in further stages in 2017.

Baha Mar resort in the Bahamas to open first 700 rooms in April 2017

After troubled beginnings, the Baha Mar resort in the Bahamas will finally open to guests this year. The first phase will see the partial opening of a new 1,800-room casino hotel which will be managed by Hyatt Hotels.

According to the Prime Minister of the Bahamas, Perry Christie, the first phase will launch in April, 2017, and the rest of the development will open in various stages throughout the year. The huge $3.5 billion resort was originally scheduled to open to holidaymakers two years ago, but the original developer fell into financial difficulty.

China Export-Import Bank is funding the final $200 million stages of construction, which will include a 300-room hotel and a 200-room hotel operated under the SLS and Rosewood brands. The already-operating Melia Nassau Beach hotel will also be renovated and rebranded to the Melia at Baha Mar.

Speaking last month at the Bahamas Hotel Association, Mr Christie said:

“You may have heard by now the announcement regarding the acquisition of the Baha Mar properties by a Hong Kong-based company – a world-class hotel, real-estate developer and business conglomerate.”

He added:

“The general contractor currently has over 500 workers on site with oversight of standards and the construction timetable for completion. This will ensure on-time completion of those properties that are slated to open in April 2017 and by December 2017.”

The Baha Mar complex is situated on the beautiful New Providence Island in the Bahamas, and will focus on providing luxury holidays for sophisticated travellers. As well as luxury hotels, the resort has a 50,000 square-foot retail village with high end shops and local Bahamian arts and crafts, restaurants and entertainment venues; a 20-acre Eco Water Park with a pool experience, and three luxury spas, including the largest spa in the Caribbean; an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature Course; the largest convention centre in the Bahamas with 200,000 square-feet of space that will be used both for business and as an entertainment and sports arena; and a 100,000 square-foot casino which will be the largest gaming complex in the Caribbean.

The opening of Baha Mar was pushed back three times over a period of 18 months, before it was announced that original developer, Sarkis Izmirlian, lost control of the project, and it entered into dispute in court with an affiliate of the China State Construction Corp.
