Bob Marley’s former home in Bahamas transformed into chic resort

Bob Marley might have been one of the most famous Jamaicans that ever lived but the Bahamas has also been a special part of his family’s life. The family had an eight-bedroom family home in a former governor’s mansion on the north side of the island, which has now been transformed into a luxury boutique resort and spa for holidaymakers by Bob Marley’s wife.

Jamaica is renowned for being the birthplace and home of the legendary reggae singer, Bob Marley. While his family grew up in Jamaica, they also had a special home in the Bahamas in former governor’s eight-bedroomed mansion.

Located on the north side of Nassau in the Bahamas, the home was a sanctuary for Bob Marley, his wife and six children. Marley’s daughter Cedella, said they fell in love with the place as soon as they saw it.

Cedella said:

“It had lush gardens, oceanfront views, and it was where you could get your balance back and find renewed energy,”

She added:

“Daddy really loved it. You got to know all your neighbours, and I remember him jogging on the beach, enjoying the fresh fruit and the people.”

When Marley died of cancer in 1981, the family continued to live there for 20 years, but it was recently that Marley’s wife Rita was unsure what to do with the place now that the children had all moved on an had families of their own. She decided to turn the home into a resort and spa so that holidaymakers could enjoy the peace and tranquillity too, and this summer it opened its doors to the public for the first time.

Marley’s Resort and Spa sits on the pink sands of Cable Beach and continues to retain the laidback Rasta charm and personal touches of the Marley family’s life and upbringing. Each room is named after lyrics Marley wrote, including “Three Little Birds”, “Mellow Mood”, plus family nicknames including "Nice Time" which is what my Bob Marley used to call Cedella.

Cedella and her younger sister Stephanie choose the chic colourful furnishings,Cedella explained:

“When you go there, you don’t feel you’re at a ‘resort’ but like you’re staying over a friend’s house,”

The Mystical Natural Spa is Rita Marley’s pride and joy, and she often created natural, holistic remedies. The spa offers bespoke treatments and therapies.

Cedella says:

“My mother has a passion for mind, body, and soul, that’s always been her thing.”

Slated to open next month, the spa will offer tailor-made treatments that combine Afro-Caribbean techniques with locally sourced, nourishing ingredients. There are Hot Stone Massages with cinnamon, sweet orange, vanilla, and patchouli essential oils, Caribbean Mocha Rum Wraps, and the One Love Herbal Bath revitalize your body.

Marley Natural is a hemp-seed-oil-based apothecary line that was started by the Marley family and includes products for the spa treatments and in-room amenities. A proportion of the profits go towards Rise UP, the non-profit foundation that supports Jamaican culture and communities.

Cedella, commented:

“Giving back has always been important to our family and our philosophy. It’s about the power of the human spirit and daddy’s message of well-being—and empowering people to make meaningful strides toward a better future.”

In the Simmer Down Restaurant, guests can savour the flavours of home-cooked Caribbean cuisine with dishes including coconut shrimp, jerk chicken, and conch fritters. The Stir It Up Bar serves hand-poured cocktails and there’s a terrace where tourists can enjoy views overlooking two swimming pools and the beautiful bay.
