Italian-American actor and producer, Robert De Niro, who has starred in over 100 films is hoping to take his success over to the tourism industry. The Academy Award winner who has repeatedly professed his love and admiration for the charming Caribbean island of Barbuda, recently made a big pitch for the destination during an important investment conference that took place in Dubai.

Since 2014, De Niro has shown interest in the beautiful twin-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda and has been serving as a special economic envoy. The renowned Hollywood actor, convinced of the destination’s potential, is an investor in the Paradise Found hotel project which is developing in Barbuda, along with Australian billionaire James Packer.

In the company of Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister, Gaston Browne, Robert De Niro made a pitch for the Caribbean destination of Barbuda. During a press conference at the Palazzo Versace in Dubai, the Hollywood legend declared:

“It’s a beautiful place, that’s why I’m involved in this project.”

Barbuda is one of the two major islands that make up the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda. This small twin-island nation is renowned around the globe as a tourist favourite due to its secluded pink and white-sand beaches like the reef-lined Spanish Point, and North Beach, backed by luscious palm trees. Barbuda’s astounding wildlife is also greatly appreciated. In the large Codrington Lagoon, the Frigate Bird Sanctuary is a habitat for huge frigate birds and more than 150 other bird species. Nearby is laid-back Codrington, the only village on the island, a charming site to see for tourists who seek peace and tranquillity.

The nation’s breath-taking natural conditions have made it appealing for all types of investors, especially in the prosperous Middle-Eastern country of the United Arab Emirates. As a matter of a fact, Antigua and Barbuda is the first country in the Caribbean Community to open an embassy and a trade and economic centre in Abu Dhabi.

In order to keep encouraging income from other countries, the Caribbean nation has launched a Citizenship Investment Programme, which offers citizenship in exchange for large foreign investments in Antigua and Barbuda. This policy has been particularly successful in the Middle East, specifically in the UAE. John Hanafin, CEO of global citizenship advisory firm, Arton Capital, explained why it had been successful so far:

"The CIP program for the twin-island has become popular thanks to the level of trust built due to the continued bilateral economic developments and favourable investment climate.”

As a result, the UAE has been one of the largest investors in the country during the past few years, most recently with a $150 million resort project called Callaloo Cay. De Niro’s pitch now looks to further Antigua and Barbuda’s prestige and popularity within the Caribbean.
