Located off the southern tip of Malaysia the island state of Singapore is a fantastic travel destination. But if you fancy a quick weekend getaway during your stay in Singapore, there are plenty of nearby destinations that you can jet off to. These range from Bagan in Myanmar with its Buddhist temples and the cat-friendly town of Kuching in Malaysia, to the volcanic island of Lombok in Indonesia for adventurous activities.

Singapore is a fantastic cosmopolitan destination where East blends with West. Located off the tip of southern Malaysia, the island nation is knowns as the “Garden City” due to its verdant parks in Gardens by the Bay.

Due to its convenient position, Singapore also makes a great base if travellers want to go off and explore other destinations for weekend getaways. Here are a few places that are easy to get to from Singapore selected by Yahoo's Travel Inspirations team:

Bagan, Myanmar

After a flight from Singapore to Yangon in Myanmar, you can take an overnight train or domestic flight to this ancient city that is full of Buddhist temples and pagodas. More than 2,000 ancient monuments from the 11th and 12th Century sit in the Bagan Archaeological area, and if you want to enjoy a more unusual view of the city, take a hot air balloon ride in the early evening and soak up the views over the lush plains

Hoi An, Vietnam

Hoi An is a well-preserved ancient town on the central coast of Vietnam that is famous for its canals and historic buildings that date between the 15th and 19th Century. The architecture is a blend of Japanese, European, Chinese and Vietnamese, and varies from French colonial buildings to traditional wooden huts. Located 15 km off the coast of Hoi An, the Cham Islands are a great place to enjoy water activities, fresh seafood and beach relaxation.

Kelimutu, Indonesia

This stunning volcano is located close to the small village of Moni in Flores, and is worth the journey. The trek to up Mount Kelimutu starts at the village, and when you reach the top you’ll be treated to views of three colourful volcanic lakes at its summit, as well as panoramic vistas that stretch out across the rugged land.

Kuching, Malaysia

There are direct two-hour flights to Kuching from Singapore, making it an easy place to reach. The word translates to cat in Malay, and this city is dedicated to the furry animals. You’ll find cat statues, cat cafes, and a museum devoted to cats. If cats aren’t your thing, head off on a day trip to a national park, kayak along the Sarawak River, or visit the Permai Rainforest Resort and stay in a treehouse.

Lombok, Indonesia

Located 20 minutes from Bali, the volcanic island of Lombok is less-crowded and home to stunning landscapes made up of forests, unspoilt beaches, and sapphire waters. Hikers can head up the slopes of Mount Rinjani for views of the crater lake and a dip in the hot springs, or browse the colourful stores of the Bertais Market and pick up a souvenir or fresh fruit.

Luang Prabang, Laos

The relaxed town of Luang Prabang was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, and features historic 16th-century temples, former palaces and French colonial architecture. The nearby waterfalls, caves and villages are great for a day out, or you can take a boat cruise along the Mekong River.

Singapore is a great all-year-round holiday destination. It's full of stunning attractions and hosts plenty of annual events including the Singapore Grand Prix, ZoukOut music festival, Deepavali, Singapore Food Festival, or the spectacular fireworks on Marina Bay on New Year’s Eve.
