For some travellers, when it comes to booking a trip overseas the decision is often swayed by the destination’s food offerings. CNN, the American news network, has put together a list of the Top 10 Food Destinations for travellers seeking the best foodie spots in the world.
On the list of global destinations that are renowned for their delicious and diverse food offerings, Vietnam, Thailand and India were named.

Despite its small size, this South East Asian country offers a wide variety of culinary delights. Every city, town and village throughout the seahorse-shaped nation offers its own unique and local dish that uses fresh, seasonal ingredients.

Some of Vietnam’s most popular dishes include Pho, a noodle soup that is often served with beef or chicken; "Banh mi", a baguette that is traditionally full of scrambled eggs, but has many variations including fried egg with onions and soy sauce, and meats; and spring rolls filled with fish, vegetables and spices. Rice is a staple in the Vietnamese diet, whether it is steamed or sticky, or in the form of noodles or pancakes. The flavours that accompany the rice derive from the French imperialists, as well as the neighbouring countries of Laos, Cambodia, China and Thailand.

The capital city of Hanoi is bursting with street food vendors and one of the most popular dishes is Xoi Xeo, sticky rice, ground de-hulled mung bean, and fried onions.

Thailand is renowned for its weird and wonderful cuisine, from traditional noodles, to char-grilled insects found in the street markets in the capital of Bangkok.

Bangkok and Chiang Mai boast some of the best in a la carte restaurants, cafes, and market stalls where travellers can try delicious and varied Thai and international dishes. The exotic fusion of flavours of Thai food has led it to become one of the most popular cuisines to be cooked in countries all around the world, and variations of traditional Thai dishes are served across the West, in homes and in restaurants.

In addittion, popular culinary delights to try while visiting Thailand include Phat Thai, stir-fried thin rice noodles, egg, tofu and shrimp; "Tom Yum Goong", a spicy shrimp soup; "Som Tum", spicy green papaya salad; "Laap", minced meat seasoned with roasted rice powder, lime juice, fish sauce and fresh herbs and served with sticky rice; and Kahi Soi, a curry-based noodle soup.

Affordable food can be found in the bustling night market in Thai towns and cities, and it’s a great place to soak up the aromas and atmosphere while chefs work in open-air kitchens.

The vast size of India and its 5,000-year history indicates that its cuisine is multi-cultured and diverse, and while the first thing that come to mind is Indian curries, there’s more to this country than Vindaloos and Baltis.

In India, it’s all about striking contrasts but in food matter, spices are the protegonists. At street food markets, visitors will find stalls piled high with colourful and fragrant powders, all of which can be used to make delicious meat and vegetarian dishes. Spicy "chole bhature" is a spicy curry made with white chick peas and served with fried flatbread, while biryani is a mixed rice dish with vegetables, spices, lentils and meat.

Other delicious foods include "Bonda", a potato snack; "Imarti", a sweet circular dish made from moong dal batter dipped in sugary syrup; and the famous samosas, made up of potatoes, onions, peas, coriander, and lentils. For a unique culinary experience, the temples, gurudwaras and masjids prepare food and distribute it to their guests, and this is a great way to sample the local food while learning about the culture and meeting people along the way.

Mouth-watering destinations

As well as offering diverse, mouth-watering cuisine, all three countries boast generous hospitality, a fascinating history into the origin of their food and culture, and magnificent natural landscapes comprising beaches, mountains, waterfalls, and national parks, making them ideal holiday destinations all year round.
