MSC Cruises to create Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve Island in Bahamas

MSC Cruises has announced plans to create a marine reserve island experience in the Bahamas.

The Geneva-based cruise line's Executive Chairman, Pierfrancesco Vago signed a 100-year lease agreement with the Prime Minister of the Bahamas, Perry Christie, to occupy and develop an island that will be named Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

MSC Cruises will spend the next two years working alongside the government of the Bahamas and ecologists to develop the cay, which was once a sand extraction station, into a protected marine reserve that will coexist with the local ecosystem.

The cruise company is one of the most eco-conscious cruise lines in the world and it will invest approximately US$200 million into creating a thriving natural marine sanctuary from a desert island.

Spanning 95 acres, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve will boast 11,400 feet of pristine beach front with six different beaches.

"This is a natural progression for our company, which is growing very rapidly, and we are thrilled about providing this totally new experience for our guests in the Caribbean."

Explained Mr. Vago, he continued:

"Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve and its exclusive offerings will be a magnificent extension of our shipboard experiences. We are scrupulous about ensuring every decision we take keeps each of our ships true to the promise of our brand, offering the authenticity and quality our guests expect."

Mr. Vago also explained:

"We will apply the same thinking and attention to detail to our Caribbean offering, of which this exclusive marine reserve will become a cornerstone, because we know our guests will be bowled over by this industry-unique experience."

As well as a marine reserve, there will be a purpose-built berth and pier on the seafront, where MSC Cruises guests can step off the ship and straight onto the tropical island.

This will also mean that guests can move between the ship and island, enjoying the island's facilities such as the 2,000-seat amphitheatre, restaurants, and bars, as well as the berthed ship's services including the on-board casino.

MSC Yacht Club guests will be able to use the island's exclusive spa and wellness sanctuary, with private bungalows and massage huts.
