Siem Reap comes out on top at Cambodia National Hospitality Competition

At the recent Cambodia National Hospitality Competition, Siem Reap proved why it is widely regarded as Cambodia's greatest tourism asset. Representatives from the province took home the top spot in five of the 11 competitions held as part of the event. The competition highlighted the top performers across the culinary, hotel and restaurant segments.

Key stakeholders at Siem Reap’s tourism sector are still basking in the glow of their province’s strong showing at the recently held Cambodia National Hospitality Competition. Representatives from Siem Reap took home the top spot in five of the 11 competitions across the culinary, hotel and restaurants segments. Siem Reap’s stellar performance was no small feat; the top spot in each competition was hotly contested with as many as 182 competitors from 36 different venues across Cambodia.

Hosted by the Cambodia Tourism Federation, Cambodia Chefs Association, Cambodia Hotel Association, Cambodia Restaurant Association and the Cambodia Chefs Federation, the event underscored the caliber of skills and professionalism that travellers can enjoy in what is one of Cambodia’s most popular destinations.

Siem Reap representatives Oun Sophea and Ven Vin of the Sokha Angkor Hotel took home the awards for best bread display challenge while the Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort’s Khan Chan and Ray Sokny were the winners of the bed-making competition.

In the culinary sector, the Angkor Era Hotel’s Hing Hene and Phorng Pheareak took the top spot in the fruit carving display competition. Mr Hing proved that he was a man of many talents as he, along with Chea Makara and Val Bunly, also won the coveted national culinary challenge.

Le Meridien’s Oeng Rachna and Chea Koem Braom received a gold medial for their floral design entry with a stunning bamboo and floral arrangement.

As can be expected, the winners were elated with their performance and undoubtedly the event served to further fuel their passion for making visitors’ holidays to Cambodia memorable. Le Meridien’s Oeng Rachna shared here experience at the competition with Khmer Times recently stating,

"I wanted more hotels to participate. It’s good for competition, and its good to compare techniques. But I’ve worked as a florist for 10 years, and my team knows that creativity wins… Winning is important, for myself and for the hotel. If you don’t love your job, you can’t do your best work"

In the first nine months of the 2015, approximately 1.55 million tourists visited Siem Reap, which, thanks to attractions such as Angkor Wat, is widely regarded as the go to destination among travellers interested in Cambodia holidays.
