Holidaymakers may soon be able to take a direct flight from Phnom Penh, Cambodia to the Preah Soramrit Kossamak Kirirom National Park.

In order to establish the service, Japan based A2A Group has submitted a request for approval to the Cambodian Ministry of Environment. Since 2011, A2A Group has been granted permission to develop facilities in the Kirirom National Park, to this end the firm is in the process of developing a luxury eco friendly resort town in the National Park.

Reportedly, A2A Group, along with a local development partner, has invested up to $500 million USD to build the vKirirom Pine Resort. Other facilities in the resort town's 20 year development plan include a shopping mall, a boarding school and homes for purchase or renting.

The proposed helicopter service to and from Phnom Penh is an integral part of the resort town plans, as it would allow holidaymakers to jet off on their eco-friendly holidays hassle free as well as provide access to facilities outside of the National Park. A2A Group is currently said to be in talks with helicopter charter firm Helistar to provide once or twice weekly flights to Kirirom National Park.

According to A2A President, Takeshi Izuka, his firm aim's to make the resort town a key holiday destination with as much international recognition as Siem Reap- home to Angkor Wat, the most popular attraction in Cambodia. Takeshi has given his assurances that his firm, which has gained 2,000 hectares of land concessions for the National Park, would limit its environmental impact on the pine forests in Kirirom, stating:

"Kirirom is filled with pine tree that is similar to my hometown in Japan. We must take care of the special environment of Kirirom [as] well."

The latest statistics indicate that Cambodia has been enjoying a growth in its tourism industry this year with arrivals in April up by 8.6 percent. Expectedly, Siem Reap attracted the most holidaymakers accounting of 44.8 percent of all arrivals while Phnom Penh and other destinations held a 40.1 percent market share. Arrivals in the period January through April have increased by 4.3 percent.
