Fastjet to operate weekly flights between Tanzania and Malawi
Budget airline fastjet has announced the launch of its sixth international route. The airline will soon be operating twice weekly affordable flights between Dar es Salaam and Malawi. At the time of the announcement, fastjet's General Manager Jimmy Kibati underscored the benefits of providing affordable flights, not just to the consumer but also to the respective countries' tourism sectors.
The General Manager of fastjet East Africa, Jimmy Kibati has confirmed that his airline will operate a new route between Dar es Salaam and Malawi from the 27th July 2015.
The twice weekly service will reportedly run on Mondays and Fridays on Fastjet's Airbus A319 jet aircraft which has a capacity of up to 156 passengers. The short 1 hour and 40 minute flight from Dar es Salaam will depart at 10h25 while the return flight from Malawi will depart at 11h40.
The announcement marks the start of fastjet's sixth international route as the firm aggressively pursues an ambitious international growth strategy.
Holidaymakers keen on booking a twin centre holiday in Tanzania and Malawi will be pleased to learn that fastjet, whose business model is based on the UK's EasyJet, has priced its service very competitively; undercutting the other full-service airlines that also operate the route.
Fares are expected to start from as low as $50 for early bookers, and although this excludes taxes, the cost remains a far cry from the minimum of $359 offered by other airlines during the month of August.
Mr. Kibati underscored the importance of collaboration with the local governments in order to be able to provide a budget friendly service stating:
"fastjet has been able to expand its international network by working closely with the governments and civil aviation authorities of Tanzania and Malawi, who understand and value the positive impact that low-cost air travel can have on the lives of their citizens and the general economy."
Kibati, went on to make the case for affordable fares by highlighting the benefits to the tourism industry in the respective countries, explaining:
"More affordable fares makes it easier for more entrepreneurs, tourists and other visitors to travel between Tanzania and Malawi which in turn will strengthen the countries' relationship, boost their tourism and business sectors, and contribute significantly to both countries' economic growth."
Currently fastjet operates domestic flights from Dar es Salaam to Mwanza, Mbeya and Kilimanjaro. In addition to the newly launched Malawi route, other international routes from Dar es Salaam include South Africa, Zambia, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
