Dominican Republic to host Mercedes Benz Fashion week for first time this month

The Mercedes Benz Fashion Week will be hosted by the Dominican Republic this year to celebrate the brand’s 60th anniversary in the country.

The debut of the fashion week in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic will be the first annual edition and it will take place from 27th to 30th April, 2015.

The Caribbean city has been chosen to host the event along with major cities including New York, Sidney, Berlin, Panama, Russia, Madrid, Stockholm and Mexico.

Mercedes Benz has partnered with MAC Cosmetics, and Gisel Calvillo (a Pro Senior Makeup Artist) will develop the concept for each model’s makeup on the runway for all shows with the help of 20 international make-up artists.

A team of stylists from the Dominican Republic will be coordinated by Federman Cruz, Miss Dominican Republic 2008, while Marianne Cruz, the Second Runner-Up at Miss Universe 2008, will be the runway director at the fashion event.

The event will take place at a crucial time, following the recent death of the Dominican fashion designer Oscar de la Renta. He was the most famous fashion designer nationally and internationally from the Caribbean country and this year’s event will showcase trends and styles that will prove that Mr De La Renta left a great legacy and an impact on up-and-coming designers, many of whom he mentored.

The Dominican Republic is a nation on the tropical island of Hispaniola located in the Caribbean Sea. The country occupies the eastern two thirds of the island and the remaining third belongs to the nation of Haiti.

The country was discovered by explorer Christopher Columbus in 1492 and it has since become a popular tourist destination with more than 220,000 British holidaymakers visiting a year.

Home to the world’s first Whale Sanctuary, the nation is a leader in eco-tourism and there are established protection zones for more than 20 per cent of its coastal and land areas.

Tourists can enjoy breathtaking landscapes and natural scenery made up of white sand beaches fringed with swaying palm trees; cobalt ocean waters; undulating green hills and winding valleys; rivers, lakes and cascading waterfalls; and soaring mountains.
