New boutique retreat unveiled in the Bahamas

A new luxury hotel and dining venue has been unveiled in Great Abaco, part of the Abaco Islands in the northern Bahamas. Amid a peaceful harbour-side village, the Sandpiper Inn offers suites in a plantation-style mansion surrounded by a collection of cottages, as well as an authentic Bahamian restaurant and bar.

A new independent luxury hotel has opened on the Bahamian island of Great Abaco. Situated in the authentic Bahamian harbour-side enclave of Schooner Bay, the Sandpiper Inn is a locally-run hotel set in a beautiful plantation-style mansion and several smaller cottages.

On an island inside a natural harbour, Schooner Bay village has a bridge to the mainland and the area is flanked by miles of unspoilt golden beaches.

The boutique-style hotel boasts several elegant but simple and traditional suites with wrap-around verandas overlooking the harbour and the sandy bay. There are seven luxury rooms and suites in the main property and six cottages spread throughout the village, offering a total of more than 24 bedrooms.

The two-and-a-half storey traditional Bahamian house has patios, gardens and a swimming pool and deck area and is accompanied by two duplex town cottages, all with views to the water. Nearby, there are several 2, 3 and 4 bedroom village cottages on the waterfront, some with their own private docks. The hotel’s fresh and inviting interiors are by acclaimed designer, Amanda Lindroth, and the hotel aims to attain 4-star status, while retaining its simple, casual and traditional barefoot luxury feel.

The hotel also has its own Bahamian restaurant and adjoining bar named the Medicine Chest. The Sandpiper’s consultant chef, Quinton Outten, is from the capital of the Bahamas, Nassau, and has accomplished experience throughout the archipelago.

The hotel’s managing director, James A. Malcolm, comes from a family of Bahamian hoteliers that hail from Harbour Island and was not only a founding member of the Schooner Bay village project but also has a history of running successful small local hotels including the historic Pink Sands in Harbour Island. According to Malcolm, the Sandpiper Inn will support south Abaco’s economy by attracting visitors and sourcing all produce served in the restaurant locally.

The Sandpiper Inn is Schooner Bay's first full-service inn and restaurant on the harbour-front and it is open to residents and visitors, as well as guests, seating up to 30 diners inside. It is set to become a focal point for the quiet pedestrian and golf cart-friendly village. Fresh seafood dishes such as pan-seared hogfish come from the bountiful local waters at Sandy Point, Crossing Rocks and Cherokee Sound, while abundant organic farm produce comes from the nearby Lightbourn Farms. All baked and pastry products served at the hotel are made by the local residents of Crossing Rocks and Sandy Point.

Located on Great Abaco in the Bahamas, Schooner Bay is an authentic harbour village only a short flight from Nassau and offers a natural wonderland of tranquil beaches, pristine forests, eco-adventures, fishing and water sports. The village was conceived by Bahamian visionary and renowned community builder Orjan Lindroth and began development in mid-2007.

It now has more than 26 houses and several businesses set around a harbour that can host boats up to 65 feet long. The village has dockage, fuel, a shop, golf cart and bike rentals, a beach club, art studio, farm, fishing lodge and clinic. In 2013, Schooner Bay won the urbanism award from the Institute of Classical Architecture – a first for a Bahamian project.
