Two scuba diving experts to spend 73 days underwater in Florida

Two professors from Roane State Community College in East Tennessee, United States will be leaving dry land this week to spend 73 days in an underwater lodge in Florida.

The scuba diving experts will be living at the Jules Undersea Lodge in Florida, which is 25 feet below the ocean's surface, where they will attempt to break a world record.

During their time underwater, 63-year-old Bruce Cantrell and 25-year-old Jessica Fain will interview marine science experts and others on a weekly online broadcast called "Classroom Under the Sea". They will also be joined by the second astronaut to land on the moon, 84-year-old Buzz Aldrin.

"The opportunity to sit down with Buzz Aldrin makes 73 days underwater worth it."

Commented Cantrell, a former state representative who has been teaching at the college since 1992. The professor will also teach an online college-credit biology course for his Roane State students while he is underwater.

The purpose of the underwater experiment and weekly broadcast is to help raise awareness about issues that affect the world's oceans and to inspire young people to pursue careers in science, technology and maths.

Both of the participants are scuba diving experts and they have spent more than 100 hours in underwater labs and habitats.

Fain said one of her concerns is not seeing the sunlight for the next two and a half months.S eh explained:

"I'm sure at some point, we'll go up very close to the surface to see what the sunshine looks like."

The marine experts plan to come out of the water on 15th December, 2014.

Jules Undersea Lodge is a 50-foot-long steel underwater lodge with two bedrooms, a common room with a dining and living area, and a wet room that will be used by the pair during their scuba diving adventures.

The lodge has a bathroom with hot water, and amenities including TVs, DVD players, telephones, intercom and a music portal. With a 42-inch round window in each room, Cantrell and Fain can also get close to some of the ocean's most beautiful marine species whilst inside.

Key Largo in Florida is a hotspot for scuba diving holidays and divers can explore several diving sites, shipwrecks, coral gardens and reefs that lie within the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park, the Everglades National Park, and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
