Caribbean Muzik Festival to return to the Bahamas

One of the Bahamas' most popular music festivals of the 1990s will be returning to Nassau, after festival organisers announced they were in talks with the Ministry of Tourism.

The Caribbean Muzik Festival was a regular annual event in the Bahamas from 1994 to 1998 and it attracted thousands of visitors every year.

Michael Tomlinson, the Chairman and CEO of Caribbean Muzik Festival, explained:

"It's official - the Caribbean Muzik Festival will be here in Nassau for the next five years."

The festival will feature musicians and bands from all over the Caribbean covering all genres of music including soca, calypso, reggae, dancehall, junkanoo, rake 'n scrape, and bacchanal.

"We are in discussions and believe that such mega events fit well into new tourism trends."

Commented Obie Wilchcombe, the Bahamas Tourism Minister, he also said the festival has the potential to unite the Caribbean:

"And using the creative imagination of our people in the areas of music and dance, nourish the spirits of our people and strengthen the cultural and heritage tourism of the Caribbean".

The event was established in 1994 and ran for four days on Bay Street in Nassau, attracting locals, tourists and cruise ship passengers. The festival showcased Bahamian artists as well as internationally-recognised regional bands and dance acts.

Desmond Edwards, the Director of the Caribbean Muzik Festival, commented:

"I am indeed grateful to the peoples of The Bahamas for their overwhelming support of the Festival in the past and am assured that they will again support this regional cultural event."

The Bahamas boasts a collection of idyllic islands, including Bimini, Berry Islands, Crooked Island Mayaguana, Acklins, The Berry Islands, Nassau, The Exumas, Grand Bahama Island, and Harbour Island. The main island of Grand Bahama is home to unique pink sand beaches created from fractured seashell mixed with sand; an underwater limestone cave system; lush botanical gardens and stunning nature reserves; and an array of luxury beachfront hotels and resorts.
