Curacao is the largest of the five islands that are located in the Netherlands Antilles in the South Caribbean Sea. The island is located off the coast of Venezuela and is famous for being one of the Caribbean's best scuba diving destinations due to its calm turquoise warm ocean waters and colourful coral reefs that fringe white sandy beaches.
The country is steeped in history and its capital Willemstad is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Towards the west of the city, there are the remains of Piscadera Bay Fort, an eighteenth-century fortification that was used to protect the island from attacks from invading forces over the centuries.
The island boasts charming pastel-coloured buildings that show off the Dutch Colonial architecture and the Hato Caves are home to impressive stalactites and stalagmites, and drawings that date back at least 1,500 years.
