The green practices employed by the resort expand far beyond what guests see during their stay and the resort wants to change this and make visitors aware of their ongoing work on mantaining sustainable standards to protect the local enviroment. Green efforts that go unnoticed by guests include treating the water in filtration plants to be reused for irrigation, using energy-saving light bulbs, sorting trash and installing automatic light control in all public areas.
The resort complex even features its very own 3,200-square-foot vegetable garden called "La Huerta del Chef," where several herbs, types of vegetable and 10 different types of chili peppers are grown. Additionally, a reverse-osmosis plant purifies all drinking water at the resort while an onsite nursery produces 60 per cent of the plants used in local reforestation. During their holidays in the Riviera Maya at the Barcelo Maya Beach, guests can also visit an onsite ecological information hut to learn more about the care of the local reefs and, the mangrove swamps and, of course, the real stars of the show, the sea turtles.

During sea turtle season which runs from May to October, the resort takes every measure in ensuring the protection of nesting sites with a wire fence and posts signs to inform guests about the sea turtles' incubation period so that they don't disturb the area. Once the eggs hatch, guests are encouraged to participate in the release of newborn turtles on the beach. Guided by Maya's onsite environmental team, participants can assist the native newborn loggerhead and green sea turtles in making their very first journey from sand to sea.
