Yet another Spanish, Catalan-based hotel company has taken over the Cayo Santa Maria resort, a property previously owned by the Barcelo Group, another chain of hotels based in Catalonia, Spain.

This time around is Husa Hotels who have scooped up the former Barcelo property, thus taking the first step in their expansion plans in the Cuba holidays industry.

The former Barcelo Cayo Santa Maria & Colonial, now re-named as the new Husa Cayo Santa Maria is being operated by the Husa Group, with plans to refresh its image under the new Husa brand while keeping the property’s original layout and luxury design so as not to damage the hotel’s prestige as a top five-star all inclusive resort in Cayo Santa Maria.

Talking about their expansion plans in Cuba and their view to add more Cuba hotels to their portfolio in the near future, the Husa Group said they were betting on a market “with a high quality offering in terms of its tourism and urban potential and with an ambitious plan of tourist development.

The family-owned hotel group is thus initiating the first stage of expansion in the Caribbean plans, with immediate plans to add more hotels in Varadero and Havana, as well as other cultural and tourist holiday destinations in Cuba.

From July 2012 onwards the re-branded Husa Cayo Santa Maria & Colonial, a 1308-room waterfront property, is owned by the Cuban hotel group Gaviota and now managed by Husa Hoteles.

The Husa Group currently manages over 160 hotel properties throughout the world, with a strong presence in Spain and other sunny destinations such as Turkey, Morocco and Argentina. Their move to enter the Cuba holidays market is in line with their strategic plans for expansion in the Caribbean.

Based in Barcelona, the Husa Group is owned by the Gaspart family and has over 80 years of experience in the hospitality in industry.
