St Kitts received over 3,000 cruise passengers in just one day

The Royal Caribbean Cruise Line’s Serenade of the Seas brought 3,000 visitors to the island of St Kitts last Tuesday 28th June. After departing from St. Thomas in the United States Virgin Islands, the ship arrived at Port Zante, bringing 2,483 tourists and 855 crew members to their brief St Kitts holidays before heading off to Aruba in the late afternoon.

Carnival Cruise Line’s vessel, Victory, also made a stop at the Caribbean island on Friday 24th June with 3,338 passengers taking Caribbean holidays and 1,049 crew members onboard as it made its way from St Lucia and later on to St. Maarten. This is the first time that two cruise companies are taking passengers to their holidays in St Kitts during the summer, and both companies now offer the stop to tourists all year round.

The combination of trips from the Serenade of the Seas and Victory equals a total of 31 calls during the Caribbean’s low-season and is expected to bring approximately 88,000 passengers to St. Kitts holidays.

Richard Skerritt, the Chairman of the Caribbean Tourism Association and the Tourism Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, has voiced his concerns over the lack of cruise ship visits to the southern and eastern region of the Caribbean as a number of cruise line companies decided to reposition their vessels to other ports.

The decline in cruise arrivals has led to a significant loss in business within the local tourism sector. Cruise arrivals are valuable customers for the Caribbean economy, particularly during the winter season when tourists flock to the region for the tropical climate and stunning natural landscapes.

Last year, the number of tourists taking holidays on cruise ships to the Caribbean increased by six per cent with over 20 million travellers from all over the globe visiting the tropical destination.
