Bahamas Groundbreaking Ceremony Marks New Generation of Resorts for Caribbean Holidays

The new 1000-acre, $3.4 billion resort and entertainment complex, Baha Mar, in the Bahamas celebrated the start of construction with an official groundbreaking ceremony on Monday 28th February 2011.

The development is the largest in the Caribbean’s history and will feature a collection of luxury Bahamas hotels, including brands such as Rosewood Hotels & Resorts, Morgans Hotel Group, Hyatt Hotels & Resorts, and a world-class Casino Hotel, which will offer 2,250 new rooms for tourists taking Bahamas holidays.

The resort will include a 50,000 square-foot retail village which will feature upscale shops and local Bahamian arts and crafts, restaurants and entertainment venues; a 20-acre Eco Water Park and pool experience and three luxury spas, including the largest spa in the Caribbean, which will be located along 3,000 feet of soft sand beach; an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature Course; the largest convention centre in the Bahamas with 200,000 square-feet of space which will be used for business or leisure as an entertainment and sports arena; and a 100,000 square-foot casino which will be the largest gaming complex in the Caribbean.

President of the Baha Mar development, Don Robinson, said that as well as providing upscale holidays in the Bahamas for tourists, the resort has created 150 jobs so far and is expected to create 12.000 jobs in total for local Bahamians and $60 million in contracts have already been awarded to Bahamian contractors and subcontractors.

Baha Mar’s CEO, Sarkis Izmirlian, believes that the creation of this huge resort complex will lead the Bahamas out of the recession and it represents the birth of a new generation of destination resorts.

“The world has never seen what we are going to create,” he said.

“I think we’re extremely lucky. I live here and I want to make sure that this country is successful and prosperous.

“It’s not just the Caribbean. There is nothing like this right now being built anywhere in the world. And the whole world right now is watching that our partners from the Peoples’ Republic of China chose The Bahamas to invest these sums of money.

“Now these would be large sums at any time, but in the current economic crisis these are staggering. So it’s a vote of confidence for the project and a vote of confidence for the people of The Bahamas,” Izmirlian added.

Holidaymakers will have to wait until 2014 until they can book their holidays in Bahamas at the resort but it seems the wait will be worthwhile to tourists, local island residents, and the Bahamas economy.
