Promotion of off season Oman holidays on agenda for new tourism strategy

Tourism officials have announced that they will be developing numerous new campaigns to encourage travellers to book Oman holidays this summer and will be looking to attract visitors from neighbouring Gulf regions and expand European markets.

Oman tourism officials have announced plans to launch several campaigns to attract tourists to the region this summer, and will be concentrating on encouraging travellers from Europe and from within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to take Oman holidays this year.

Oman's Minister of Tourism, Rajiha Abdul Ameer Ali, spoke of Oman's "Summer Campaign" at this year's Arabian Travel Market (ATM) exhibition in Dubai earlier this month and said:

"Oman's Summer Campaign is a highly competitive industry-wide initiative. The ministry, Oman Air and our leading hotels, resorts and apartments have crafted packages for affordable short breaks, family and leisure holidays."

The packages will include significant discounts on Oman Hotels, including Muscat hotels, airfares, and additional incentives where guests on holidays in Oman can receive an extra day's stay at participating properties.

The Director of Tourism in Oman's Tourism Ministry, Haitham M Al Ghasani, spoke at the International Tourism Bourse in Berlin earlier this year and said that the recent global recession did not significantly impact on tourism in the Sultanate. He said:

"Many European tourists had booked their seats for Oman much before the crisis. Other countries of the GCC also provided good traffic. We have learnt from the economic crisis that it is unwise to put all your eggs in one basket. We are no longer relying on Europe alone. We are looking at other regions as well."

Oman is now looking to expand its tourism promotion offices in Europe in countries including Germany, the UK, France, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia as well as branches further afield in Russia, Japan, India, and China to attract more travellers from all over the world to enjoy Oman holidays.

During the Gulf Incentive, Business Travel and Meetings Exhibition (GIBTM) in Dubai earlier this year, Oman was described as "an exciting niche destination" for meetings, incentives, conference and events (MICE). With both the planned 6000 seat convention centre in Muscat and off season travellers enjoying Oman holidays, officials are optimistic about the economic benefits for the region.
