Travel officials are optimistic about the future of Kenya's tourism industry as the number of UK travellers booking Kenya holidays over the next year has increased in comparison to 2008 visitor numbers, and the region's image is re-established.

Increase in travellers booking Kenya holidays

The number of British travellers taking Kenya holidays over the nest few months is set to rise as the image of the African region has improved thanks to the Kenya Tourist Board.

Kenya has always been a popular destination for travellers looking for safari holidays and a chance to see the "Big 5" in their natural habitat. After last year's post-poll violence in the country, the Kenya Tourist Board have worked hard to restore the image of the region as a safe and diverse tourist destination and it seems that these efforts have paid off.

The post-poll violence and effects of the global recession saw the number of travellers taking Kenya holidays drop to 123,000 in 2008, compared to 224,000 in 2007. So far, numbers in 2009 have risen by 15 per cent from the 2008 visitor figures.

UK Representatives from Touristik Union International, Bobby Riley and Karen Hitchen, recently announced that more people are booking holidays in Kenya because of the vast wildlife, stunning beaches and choice of tourist attractions. Ms Riley spoke at the Baobab Beach Resort in Diani whilst presenting the hotel's director, Bimal Thaker, with a First Choice Gold Award.

Ms Riley said:

"As one of the major travel groups in Europe we are glad to note that Kenya's image which was torn apart by the post-election violence last year has improved for the better."

Najib Balala, Tourism Minister, has also announced that the industry has recovered by 90 percent, indicating that the travel and tourism industry is back on track.
