Getting Around

The air-conditioned Skytrain elevated rail network is well connected, making it the easiest daily commuting option. Pick up a one-day travel pass known as a BTS Rabbit card. Once inside the city centre, getting around on foot is the best way to see the sights. You can easily find Tuktuks (motorised rickshaws) willing to take you wherever you need to go and these are quick to hop on if you’re dashing to your next destination.

Buses are plentiful and cheap to travel on and many have air-conditioning.

Hire cars can be found at the two major airports as well as around the city, though nervous drivers should be deterred from tackling the roads as traffic is often a problem. Drive on the left-hand side.

When to Visit

Bangkok enjoys a tropical climate with three distinct seasons, so make sure you time your visit wisely otherwise you could be hotter or wetter than you imagined!

Temperatures average at a lush 25°C in December and January in what is perceived as the ‘cool season’, making it ideal for a dose of winter sun. this is great news for those of you who want to escape the colder months at home.

Thailand’s hot season occurs between March and June, followed by the rainy season until October – so plan ahead and book flights to Bangkok earlier in the year.

Whenever you visit, you’ll be welcomed with open arms – Thailand is not known as Land of Smiles for nothing.

City Festivals

Often referred to as the world’s largest water fight, the Songkran Water Festival is a wet and wild event lasting 3-4 days.

Luckily, this celebratory shower falls in the middle of Bangkok’s hot season in April, and doubles up as the Thai New Year.

The Lantern Festival in November provides a more peaceful atmosphere with the release of thousands of twinkling lanterns fill the night sky, while the romantic Loy Karthong Festival sees small boats loaded with candles floating across canals and lakes.
