Hong Kong Holidays

Hong Kong

A global icon for its neon signs and towering cityscapes hemmed in by harbours, and its unique east-meets-west fusion of business and culture, Hong Kong has dozens of fabulous hotels and does shopping and eating in style, making it an immensely enticing short break or stopover destination.

Introducing Hong Kong

One of earth's most iconic and dynamic cities, Hong Kong is known for its shining skyscrapers rising above the waterside, its brilliant neon lights and vibrant east-meets-west culture, delicious food and fabulous shopping. But beyond its main island, a contrasting landscape of unspoilt mountains, national parks and desert islands also beckons.

The modern metropolis has a fabulous selection of luxurious hotels and one of the world's best transport systems, making it supremely accessible for visitors. It's the perfect stopover or twin-centre destination if you are travelling to or from the Far East and Australasia, and a short break can also be teamed with a stay on the nearby magical island of Macao.

East meets west

Encircled by the waters of the Pearl River Delta and the South China Sea, the Chinese enclave's ancient customs and British colonial heritage have given it a unique character, and there are still remnants of the past here if you look close enough.

Although it is an ultra modern city, travellers can uncover a traditional tangle of streets in Hong Kong Island's Western District. The 19th-century Man Mo Temple is an absolute must-see for its ambience, architecture and rich history, while Aberdeen fishing village in the Southern District offers a glimpse back in time at a traditional floating community.

Those interested in culture can find a whole array of concerts and exhibitions in the city, from Cantonese opera to museums showcasing local contemporary artists. Hong Kong Museum of History gives a great overview of the region's fascinating past.

Fabulous shopping and mouth-watering food

Duty-free shopping is definitely a city highlight, and you can buy virtually anything in famously-enterprising Hong Kong. There are glitzy malls and high-street shops galore, plus local designer boutiques, Chinese antique stores, flea markets and districts perfect for bargain-hunting.

Travellers looking for a uniquely Asian experience can browse the exotic markets of Kowloon, selling birds, flowers and ancient herbal remedies, as well as some excellent street food. Evening markets, such as Temple Street Night Market, are also a hive of activity and local life that's a real treat for curious visitors.

Hong Kong is the culinary capital of the Far East where you can find the best of regional food such as Cantonese, Vietnamese or European, as well as plenty of delicious fusion restaurants such as Yin Yang. You can sate your appetite in any number of wonderful restaurants where virtuoso chefs rustle up classic local dishes such as steaming dim sum and wonton noodles.

Remarkable views and hidden surprises

As well as embracing Hong Kong's bustling streets, fine restaurants and fun entertainment options, visitors should not miss a chance to see its eye-popping panoramas from the water with a tour on a traditional sampan boat or aboard the Star Ferry that crosses the harbour. You can also enjoy magnificent views of the city from the top of Victoria Peak, which is Hong Kong Island's highest point. Alternatively, you can choose to take in the vistas from the chic collection of rooftop bars and restaurants on Hong Kong Island.

For something altogether different you can head out of the city and discover paradisiacal white sand beaches just a short hop away, and small traditional villages hidden in the verdant hills of the nearby New Territories.
