Malta Holidays

Overview

A perfect combination of golden, sandy beaches and world heritage sites dating back to prehistoric times, Malta is a hidden gem located on the Mediterranean Sea, near the southernmost tip of Italy.

Malta holidays are less crowded than the popular beach resorts of the Canary Islands and the Balearics. However, this small island is just as picturesque and sunny as any other popular beach destination in the Mediterranean. Malta holidays have a lot to shout about, particularly its centuries-old history, which has seen the successive reigns of the Phoenicians, the Greeks, the Byzantines and the British. The island is also known for some of the most ancient UNESCO world heritage sites, such as the Neolithic caves of Hal-Salflieni Hypogeum, the baroque buildings of the capital city of Valetta and the Megalithic ruins of the Ġgantija temples - making it a hot spot for history and culture buffs. But don’t worry if history's not your cup of tea, there's much more to keep you entertained during your holidays in Malta. The Blue Flag beaches of St. George’s Bay, Golden Bay and Ghajn Tuffieha give you the chance to enjoy nature at its glorious best, or if you're travelling with kids, Popeye Village should be your first stop.

When it comes to accommodation, the area around Valetta has some of the best-rated hotels in the Mediterranean. With warm sunshine, pristine beaches and monuments of great archaeological importance, your Malta holidays are going to be an experience worth remembering.

Getting Around

Public transport on both Malta and Gozo is excellent, with efficient bus services that can take you to most places. Hiring a car is also a feasible way of exploring the island, and scooters, mopeds and bicycles are also available for hire. For convenience, use one of the many taxis. There is a ferry service that links Malta and Gozo, and boats link to Comino.

Like in the UK, you drive on the left hand side of the road, and your normal national driving license should be all you need.

Mesmerising Mellieha

Visit Mellieha and you will be spoilt for things to see and do.

The golden sands of Mellieha Bay (also known as Ghadira Bay) and its clear, shallow waters are a sure hit with sunbathers, snorkelers and watersports enthusiasts. Rocky outcrops divide the beach into three stretches, ranging from lively to quiet, so guests can take their pick.

Drive 15-minutes to The Mediterraneo Marine Park in historic Naxxar for a swim with bottle-nosed dolphins. Located on the coastal road, kids can enjoy playful sea-lions, turtles, pirouetting macaws and cockatoos. Check out slithery snakes and lizards from a safe distance as they roam their state-of-art reptile habitat. Malta’s only marine park also has a mini-lab play area for kids and a cafeteria.

Set aside an afternoon to visit the Blue Lagoon in Comino Island, its Mediterranean waters reflecting the blue sky, with pure white sand visible beneath. Swim, sunbathe, snorkel or simply laze on the beach.

Loved Popeye the Sailor Man as a kid? Here’s a chance to pay a visit to Popeye Village and get up close to the comic book character and friends Olive Oyl, Bluto, Swee’Pea and Wimpy! The former film set of the 1980's hit Popeye can be found at Sweethaven village near Mellieha’s Anchor Bay.

Stunning Sliema

Slimena is another one of our favourite spots where there is so much to see and do.

Around the Sliema area, watersports are in abundance, and you’ll often see water skiers and jet-skiers whizzing around the Med. If you’re feeling a little adventurous, and need a bit of an adrenaline injection, why not sign up for one of these thrilling activities yourself? There’s no time like the present!

Like the majority of the Maltese coastline, the beaches are rocky but lidos offer safe swimming around Sliema and flat jetties are great for sunbathing. Ancient pools also dot the coastline near Sliema, and with ladders dangling down into the azure waters they are the perfect place for a quick dip.

Sliema is heaving with nightlife spots, from cosy pubs to lively bars. Most of these are centred on Triq ix-Xatt, near the harbour, where you’re guaranteed to find an establishment that has the vibes you’re looking for. Whether it’s wine, cocktails or just a good draught beer, there’s a refreshing drink waiting!
