When visiting Sri Lanka, we highly recommend heading inland to visit the beautiful, ancient city of Kandy.  Located in the heart of the country and accessed via winding roads which carve their way through some of the country’s most beautiful scenery; for lovers of culture, food and historic sights, this city is a must.

There are very few tours within Sri Lanka that do not visit the Sinhalese capital Kandy along the way and it’s easy to see why.  Not only is it conveniently located in the heart of the country, but it is also en route to many other places of interest including the cultural triangle further north and the tea plantation region close to Nuwara Eliya which is slightly further south.

The number of activities, cultural experiences and points of interest in Kandy ensure you can easily fill a few days here. Take an afternoon stroll around Kandy Lake, the shady path provides fabulous views of the hills and the city. Created by the last Sinhalese King in 1807 as an ornamental lake, it is now used as a popular boating pond. Visit the Royal Palace Complex which houses both the King’s Palace and Queen’s Palace as well as the more recently converted National Museum with its many pieces of royal regalia and pre-colonial artifacts. And no holiday to Kandy would be complete without a trip to see the Temple of the Tooth which contains the most sacred relic of Buddhism, although it is never seen as it is very closely guarded in a series of caskets.

    Kandy Perahera

    Kandy Perahera

In the months of July and August the number of visitors to Kandy peaks considerably for the two-week Perahera, at the Temple of the Tooth. Elephants, dancers, drummers and other performers come together to parade the sacred Tooth Relic through the streets. Such rituals have persisted for many centuries and there is a belief amongst the locals that the by continuing these traditions, disasters such as famine will be averted. If you plan to visit during this time, make sure you book well in advance as hotels and guesthouses do get heavily booked up.

    Do The Kohonba!

    Do The Kohonba!

Most visitors to Sri Lanka find themselves experiencing the Kohonba – a traditional Kandyan Dance – during their stay. Either as part of a tour, or booked independently this famous, traditional dance is a must-see for all tourists visiting this ancient city. In centuries gone by this dance was often made up of up to 50 male dancers dressed in silver belts and beaded breastplates with anklets and headdresses. It is now more traditionally performed by women, emphasising more on grace rather than the acrobatic elements of the dance.

    Peradeniya Botanical Gardens

    Peradeniya Botanical Gardens

Located to the west of the City, the Royal Botanic Gardens are situated right by the Mahaweli River and are renowned for their collection of orchids. Another highlight is the giant Javan fig tree on the great lawn with its beautiful canopy of branches and enormous central trunk. Take a picnic, stroll through the gardens and look out for the many monkeys and fruit bats that call this place home.

    Udawattekele Sanctuary

Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, take some time to experience the natural beauty of the Udawattekele Sanctuary. Enjoy the 5km walk through this natural reserve where you may stumble across a troupe of monkeys grooming or eating, a Buddhist hermit sitting outside his home or you may even find yourself looking down on the roofs of the Temple of the Tooth.
