Male City Tour

Duration: Half Day

male city tour

A holiday in the Maldives isn’t just about swimming in the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean and soaking up the sun on beautiful white sand beaches. For those who would like to soak up the history and culture instead, take a city tour of Malé, the capital of Maldives and one of the busiest and most populous islands in the archipelago.

Malé city lies on the southern edge of North Malé Atoll and is the Maldives’ commercial centre and seat of government. The island has its own harbour and the international airport is close by on Hulhule Island. Many tourists flock here every year, mainly due to the excellent shopping and many attractions, including numerous historic and religious landmarks. This tour will reveal some Malé’s city highlights, such as Grand Friday Mosque, the National Museum, Jumhooree Maidan and the Fish Market.

Grand Friday Mosque is the biggest mosque in the Maldives, given the name Masjid-al Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu-al-A'z'am. This grand architectural masterpiece was completed in 1984 and boasts a dominant gold dome, beautiful coral engravings and unique minarets. The mosque houses the tombs of national heroes from the Maldives, and it is also the resting place for various members of royalty. The famous Islamic Centre is also located here, which can accommodate over five thousand worshipers at a time.

The National Museum is one of the Maldives’ most popular tourist attractions. Located in the Sultan Park, it is the only remaining building of the former Sultan's palace. The museum hosts a valuable collection of artifacts, including thrones, ceremonial robes, rifles and statues excavated from former temples, all of which portray the country’s rich cultural heritage and history.

Visiting the bustling Malé Fish Market and the Local Market is a must. Located on the northern waterfront, this area is the hub of commercial activities. Soak up the sights, sounds and smells of the shops, which sell a wide variety of local produce such as fresh fruit, vegetables, oil, spices and many other items. Prepare for an entertaining show when the local fishermen bring in their daily catch in the afternoon, which often includes tuna, bonito and swordfish. Watch them as they clean and cut the fish, which is a skilful art that won’t fail to impress you.

In this area, you will also visit Jumhoorie Maidan, which is more commonly known as Republic Square. With its beautifully-kept lush green grass, trees and flowers, it is no wonder that this scenic area is Male's most popular place for relaxation and social gatherings. Many important government buildings are also located here.

Not to be missed, this fascinating tour combines glimpses of Maldivian past with the present.
