Male Shopping

Duration: Half Day

male shopping

If you fancy a break from sunbathing on paradise white-sand beaches and swimming in crystal clear waters during your holiday in the Maldives, a shopping trip in the capital Malé is bound to appeal to you. Shopping is a popular activity for the locals, particularly in the evenings when the temperature is cooler, and Malé is the best island for it. Here you will find colourful flea markets, fish markets, souvenir shops and much more besides.

Your tour guide will point out many of the best shops to you, but if you would like to explore on your own, it is easy to find your way around Malé. At just over a mile long, the city is very small. Whether you are looking for fresh local produce, beautiful handicrafts, electronic gadgets, clothes or souvenirs, Malé has it all, which is why the city is so popular for shopping. After seeing many of the historical and religious landmarks around the city, including the National Museum, Grand Friday Mosque, Republic Square and the Presidential Palace, exploring the bustling stalls and markets is a must.

Located on the waterfront near Republic Square, the main market area is the hub of commercial activities, packed full of shoppers, stall holders and fishermen. The local market stocks a wide variety of local produce from different Maldivian atolls, selling everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to oil, coconuts, nuts, homemade pickles, spices and jams. Soak up the sights sounds and smells as you browse the individual stalls. You will be spoilt for choice.

Other popular shopping areas include Majeedhee Magu, which is situated on the island’s main road. Lined with shops and stalls on either side, you will find a wide variety of items here, including handbags, jewellery, perfume, clothes and much more. Chaandanee Magu is one of the best places for gifts and souvenir shopping. This market is otherwise known as the Singapore Bazaar because the majority of goods sold here are imported from Singapore. You will also find beautiful local handicrafts here, including colourful Maldivian woven mats and miniature wooden Dhonis (Maldivian sail boats). You may just pick up a bargain.

One of the best and busiest markets is Malé Fish Market during the afternoons. Prepare to be entertained as the local fishermen bring in their catch of the day; mainly tuna, bonito and swordfish. The market fills up quickly with locals coming in to buy fresh fish. Look out for the fishermen cleaning and cutting their fish, a speedy and skilful art that is definitely worth watching.

Shopping in Malé is an experience not to be missed.
