Holidays in Santo Domingo
The capital of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo is an enchanting city that blends old world charm with modern Latin flair. Santo Domingo is the oldest city in the Americas, having been founded in 1496 by Christopher Columbus’ brother Bartholomew. The city skyline features 16th century colonial buildings, imposing palaces and fortresses and modern 21st century buildings. Santo Domingo’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and boasts the oldest cathedral, monastery and university in the New World. The expansive plaza is home to the quaint 17th century sundial and is framed by palaces that house the city’s interesting museums. Theatres and galleries showcase the city’s cultural heritage and after dark the atmospheric restaurants, cafes and bars that line the cobblestone streets of the Old Town come to life. This city offers great shopping with designer stores, outlets and markets. Santo Domingo's unique atmosphere and vibrant culture make it one of the most exciting cities in the Caribbean.
