Getting Around

The main mode of transport on the island is the guagua, a small minibus that is authentic and cheap. Be prepared to cram on though! There are also long-haul buses, if you need them. Car hire is possible but you’ll need to be a confident driver. Taxis are available in the major resorts. Motoconchos (motorbike taxis) are popular in Puerto Plata, and publicos (private cars) are available on the Silver Coast.

Activities

Whether you want to ride across the beaches or start an ascent into the mountains, horse ranches including Lorilar Ranch will help you realise this Dominican day trip dream. Make your way through lush forests and pretty villages, spotting wildlife as you go or canter along powder-soft white sand. And don't worry, you don't have to be a Grand National jockey to join in the fun – there are lots of trips perfect for complete beginners.

Discover Cabarate

It's not all fly and flop in Dom Rep! Watersports are big business and the white sand beaches and near-perfect conditions attract adventure-loving holidaymakers in their droves. Beaches in the small town of Cabarate offer the best kitesurfing and windsurfing on the island. As the name suggests, Kite Beach is popular with kite surfers and there are several schools promising to make you a kitesurfing and windsurfing pro in no time. The nightlife is just as great, and so are the restaurants and bars on the main street.

Dive Into the Blue

Swim, snorkel, scuba dive or just enjoy those incredible azure blue waters from your hotel balcony. The Caribbean Sea is picture-postcard perfect in Punta Cana. Fancy skippering a speedboat from Arena Gordo Beach, fishing for your own catch of the day off the coast of Bavaro, or discovering what swims beneath with the help of a snorkel or scuba kit? It’s all here on the coast of Punta Cana.
