I have an annual 'girls holiday' with my closest friends every year, and I am about to go on my fifth girly adventure next week. The excitement for our trip has inspired me to write a post about some of the best places for a girl's holiday.
It's difficult choosing destinations for girl's holidays, mainly because everyone has to agree and quite a lot of boxes need to be ticked. If you want to party for a week then you can narrow your choices down to places like Ibiza and Magaluf. If you and your friends prefer a holiday where you can do a bit of exploring and see new places then selecting a destination can be a bit tougher.
My top places and experiences
From my experience, most girl's holidays need to have the following things: sunshine, beaches, places to eat out, attractions and sights to see. Here are some of the places I have visited on a girl's holiday, and I have also included a list of places that we want to go to in the future.
Lindos, Rhodes, Greece
This is where we went on our first girl's holiday, and we liked it so much we went back the following year. Lindos is a picturesque village in Rhodes with lovely beaches, clear blue sea, rooftop restaurants and a stunning Acropolis.
Even though it's quite a small village, there's plenty to keep you busy for a week. Head down to the beach and try some water sports, we were brave enough to hire a boat which turned out to be very entertaining. You can hire a jet ski, go on a pedalo (which is actually quite hard work) or go snorkelling around the bay.
You can't go to Lindos without climbing the Acropolis. The locals wait at the bottom offering tourists a donkey ride to the top. Some of our group refused to do this as they felt bad for the donkeys and it's great exercise (and not too challenging) to walk up to the top. You have to pay a small fee to enter the Acropolis but it's definitely worth it to see the ruins and the spectacular views over Lindos.
Other things to see and do include St Paul's Bay, a pretty bay with a chapel where a lot of people get married. There's also the Church of the Panagia, a traditional Greek church with gorgeous decor and fabulous paintings. One of the reasons why we like going on holiday to Greece so much is because of the food, make sure you try some of the local favourites including Moussaka, Dolmades and Beef Stifado.
Cala d'Or, Mallorca
If it's charming bays with gorgeous waters and a slightly livelier town then Cala d'or in Mallorca is a great choice. Although not my favourite girls destination that we have been to, I would still recommend it as it's a good all round destination. In Cala D'or you can combine, sun, sea and cocktails with a few fun day trips.
Parc Natural de Mondrago is well worth a visit, although it gets busy at times, it's relatively unspoilt compared to some other local spots. Here you can take advantage of the white sandy beaches, go on walks with beautiful views and sit back and relax at the beach bar. If you and your friends are sporty and enjoy water sports then you can go on a Sea Rider, hire kayaks go snorkelling and diving or head out on a boat trip.
There are plenty of restaurants to choose from in the town serving all sorts of different cuisines, from traditional Spanish restaurants to BBQ food and even French cuisine. If you fancy a night out there are lots of bars and a couple of clubs.
If you are looking for a city break then I would highly recommend Nice. It's ideal because it has everything you could want from a big city, but it also has sandy shores if you want to spend a few days at the beach. We actually didn't spend much time on the beaches in Nice, instead choosing to test out some of the sandy beaches along the coast. The sea in Nice is lovely, but the beaches aren't sandy and you have to hobble down the stony banks to get to the sea.
Nice is also ideal if you want to indulge in a little retail therapy with your girlfriends. There are lots of different shops hidden all around the city. We found it extremely difficult to choose where to eat out every evening, because there were so many great restaurants.
While in Nice, take a stroll along the Promenade des Anglais, it's relaxing walking along the beach and you can hire a bike if you want to. Nice is also filled with numerous historical buildings and museums, including Musee Matisse, Musee Marc Chagall, Nice Cathedral and The St Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral.
Nice is in the Côte d'Azur (The French Riviera), so it's not too far from some of the top celebrity hotspots. We hired a car and went on a day trip to St Tropez as it was one of the girl's birthday. We spent a few hours on the sun kissed beaches staring out at the enormous yachts, wondering who might be on them.
St Tropez town is a fascinating place, it feels as though you are stepping into another (insanely rich) world. Ferraris roar around the streets, billionaires stroll around with their model girlfriends and there's some very high end shops. Make sure you walk down to the harbour to see all the luxurious yachts and boats up close.
Other places you should try
So there's a selection of some of the places that we have been and the things we have seen and done. I hope it gives you some ideas for your next girl's holiday.
I have also created a separate shortlist of the places I think should be on our shortlist for next year that I want to share with you.
