Getting Around

It’s easy to hail a taxi in Luxor, but remember there are no meters, so you have to get familiar with the rates. Navigate between the East and West banks of Luxor by boat or the traditional felluca, with a taxi usually waiting on the other side. Motorcycles are an efficient way to get around, especially in the mountainous areas. Bicycle rentals are popular, especially in the quieter rural West Bank side, but do check the tyres before hiring! They can also be carried on board the local ferry. There are also mini-buses with fixed routes that are available for tourists.

Luxor's Ancient Attractions

Luxor’s ancient attractions are its main draw and there's certainly plenty to choose from. There's the majestic and the Karnak Temple Complex on the city’s east Bank, and the iconic Valley of the Kings on the west. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even see the ancient sights from up high on a hot air balloon! After all the sightseeing, hop onto a felucca and sail down the Nile to Banana Island and on the way back you’ll be treated to the most glorious sunset over the river. If you've got time to kill, enjoy a stroll along the Sharia al-Corniche, a beautiful riverside walkway that runs from Luxor to Karnak, scattered with shops for you to browse as you go.

Shop Like A Local In Luxor's Souk

Shop like the locals do and head for Luxor’s souk, where you’ll find a colourful wonderland of bargains, ranging from aromatic spices to silky fabrics. If you’re hoping to walk away with a great deal, be sure to practise your best haggling skills - you can often get half off the asking price if you know how! The Savoy Market near the Luxor Temple is a good place to shop for Egyptian cottons, trinkets, scent bottles, carvings of pharaohs as souvenirs.
